Hi, I'm running 16.0.493 Standard Annual and am planning on creating a DR box.

I wanted to basically install a fresh version 16 on it and restore a config file onto it so in the event of a disaster I can just plug it in and its good to go.

But how would this work in theory? Would I be able to restore the config (as part of the installation process) if I've got a live system with an active license online?

Multiple instances using the same key will get the key banned unless it's an enterprise license.

Ok thanks cobaltit, good job I checked!

If I was to turn off the live box, restore a config to a DR machine test it etc. then turn that off and power the live system back on again, would this create issues?

Hi Fred2k

In theory, your process should work but cant be guaranteed, unless 3CX support can confirm? I've done this before for a client but the problem is keeping the standby machine up to date.

Enterprise is the correct way to go with this.

If you just want a DR box ready to go, why not clone the first box to a standby box?

Power off 1st box
Capture image
Power back on
Take standby system
Restore image - leave off
DR - power up

With the correct software, you don't even need to power off 1st box - you can clone live.

With VMs, this is even easier.

Or upgrade to enterprise by paying the diff in cost.

Going forward that's not a bad idea. But to start with I wanted to test a couple of installations (15.5 and 16) and then apply a backup because we're having having some quirky behaviour on our live box.

Can you recommend a free cloning software?

Hi @Fred2k

You can look into Clonezilla as an example, however using an enterprise license and a 3CX failover, would also keep the Passive system updated with any changes/additions made on the Active system.

Enterprise does sound like the best option.

Thanks again for everyone's input.
