The 500 error is most likely caused by what is described in the thread you linked to.

About root password though getting changed or corrupted, this is the first I've seen mentioned.
Are you sure you didn't simply forget it? Also is it possible that you are trying to SSH onto the server and using root? Most non-3CX ISO installation don't allow root to SSH, so maybe also try to log on from the actual terminal.

We have the password documented, and I've also tried from the local console(hyper-v). I'm going to reset it this evening so it is not that big of deal but figured I'd drop a thread as it was odd

I had the root password corruption thing too. The script bricked my VM. This was lightsail instances using the 3cx installer.

Yours sounds like a case where the upgrade failed and caused something to not even boot.

Over the past couple of months, we have made many improvements to the upgrade script and we now have success to over 95%, and in most cases that fail, we manage to revert back without breaking something.

Regardless though, performing an OS upgrade is a complicated task, so the general advice is to have a full backup of you system before you start it, and if something does go wrong, be prepared to redeploy the VM, as this is the fastest way to get your installation back up and running.
