On Hold Music Volume

The volume of our on hold music is very loud. Does anyone know of a way to control the volume of on hold music?

If it's a file, then it must me modified externally with audio software, then re-loaded to the PC.

We tend to put Audacity on the box.
Compression will address dynamic volumes, else generally decrease the volume on the default hold by about 11dB.
