I've got a request by a client to create a separate outbound caller ID for a department, so that whenever this department calls a client the number displayed is the department direct number instead of the company's general number.
As far as I know you can have the "Default Caller ID" or an extension by extension custom caller ID.
But I'd rather not set the called ID for these people on a person by person basis if I can help it, I'd rather automate it. ie. put all their extensions in a range say 3xx and use a pattern replacement to dictate their outbound caller ID.

Is that a doable thing? The numbers are on the same trunk, and while I could use another trunk and set up an outbound rule to force their calls to go out it, then set the default call display on the second trunk to their DID, that would mean the client paying for a second trunk for what currently amounts to the vanity of a handful of people. So I'm hoping there is a simpler method, other than adding the caller ID to each extension.

Really I think you ask too much! ;) Oftently I find that 3cx doesn't cover my need by design but here you already found 2 solutions
- set caller ID in extension, one by one
- use 2 differents trunks and manage route outbound calls by user group, by pattern as you want,

but maybe there is a way of doing what you want without paying another trunk if you manage to be able to register your same trunk twice in 3cx, with 2 differents names, but I don't even know if its possible or supported by 3cx and/or your trunk provider. Someone know if its possible ?

The two options are:

1. Set the extension caller ID

2. Create a separate trunk and assign a unique caller ID. Many SIP providers will allow you to make multiple registrations at no additional cost.

Fair enough, but if you don't ask you won't receive ;-) I will see if I can make a second registration if not, I will offer the option of two trunks to the client.
