It seems in the older days on some phone systems, when a receptionist would pickup a call, they could somehow put the person on hold or some such, and then tell another employee something like "John Smith is on line 2", and then the employee could go to their own phone, press a button (presumably one corresponding with the 2nd line) and then pickup the call. In case another employee wanted to join in or listen to the conversation, they also could pickup their own handset and press the same line to do so.

Is this possible to do with 3CX? Or is this basically what Shared Parking is?

Finally, if this is basically what shared parking is, is there a way to have the BLF keys on the desk phone to say "Line 1", "Line 2", etc instead of "SP1", "SP2", etc so as to not confuse older folks who might be used to the older systems? (I do train our users but there's always some people who are just more comfortable with the things they are used to :) )

That's shared parking. You can dial the "number" SP1 from the web client/app but I don't know offhand if that can be used in a custom speed dial BLF. But then to park someone there you'd need to transfer to the SP1 "number" anyway so it's simpler to teach them the SP1 syntax. One can also park/unpark from the Panel screen in the clients.

We've setup dummy extensions that forward to SP1 and called those dummy extensions "Line 1" etc, but the problem is you lose presence information then doing this.

Far better to teach them that SP1 is line 1.

Ah, perfect. Sounds good then - I will go ahead and proceed to train people that way then. Thanks everyone!

Broadsoft - BroadWorks retains a great deal of business becasue they approach VoIP by offering (Line Key System) functionality. The major benefit here is you don't need to train anyone allowing you to move on to sell to the next customer. All the phones have the same functionality with the exception for managers they can barge in on any of the Line calls and hit mute to only listen in. Parking and Parking Orbits have a place for small medium large business. Restaurants and Beauty Retail is the place for SLA. Kinda like faxing its not going away :)
