Solved Phones losing connection to HA SBCs every night

I've been banging my head against this one for weeks. It seems like every night all our phones disconnect from our pair Raspberry Pi 4 HA SBCs. The fix is to reboot the active SBC so it switches to the other or restart the phones.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Does the pair of SBCs still have an IP the next morning? Also can you ping the IP of each of the PIs and the Floating IP?

Both Pis are definitely accessible, but I have not thought to hit the floating IP. I will do that next time.

One thing I am doing is setting the Static IPs of the PIs at the router level and leaving the PIs themselves set to DHCP. Could that be causing this issue?

I've also rebuilt the SBC cluster twice (didn't reinstall raspberry os tho). Networking gear is all brand new Unifi gear.

172.16.40.1 - Router
172.16.40.2 - Floating IP
172.16.40.3 - piSBC01
172.16.40.4 - piSBC02

Could you please clarify hear? You mean you have a IP Reservation on your Router for the 2 RPis and leave the RPis in DHCP, but each morning, their IPs are what you have set in the Reservation, right?


Also, if you have DHCP, having the Floating IP be 172.16.40.2, is it possible that the DHCP is giving this address to another device?
I would suggest setting to something high, like 172.16.40.250, then excluding this IP from the DHCP Pool so that you guarantee no device will get this IP from DHCP.
Note: If you change the Floating IP address, you will have to adjust it also in the Management Console for hte IP Phone provisioning settings....

Out of curiosity though, in the morning before you restart your Pi, try pinging the Floating IP, then disconnect/shutdown both PIs and ping again, if there is an answer, you know something else on the network 'stole' the Floating IP Address.

Yep that's correct.

Our DHCP pool for the phone VLAN starts at 172.16.40.10 and goes up, so unfortunately no other device is getting that DHCP address.

I will definitely ping the Floating IP next time it goes down.

Not that I can think of, after this for me it would mean troubleshooting, capture on phone while SBC HA is down to see if I get responses, etc...

Update for @NickD_3CX and any one else that stumbles upon this. I set the IPs static on the Pis and not on the router and the issue went away.
