For testing purposes, we wanted to see if it would be possible to manually configure a Polycom phone to work with a 3CX PBX in the cloud. We were somewhat successful, we were able to get the phone(specifically, a VVX500) to register and to make inbound and outbound calls from extension to extension. However, we are still unable to get the phone to call outside of the phone system. Are there any recommendations to try for getting the phone to call outbound? I understand that 3CX does not officially support remote STUN for Polycoms, and that an SBC is the recommended approach for remote phone systems. Just wanted to see how operational I could get a Polycom to work.

What do the logs show is happening when you make a call?

The STUN/Direct SIP aspect of the setup is just for registration of endpoints to the 3CX server and has no bearing on outbound calls per say. Agree with @craigreilly if you are familiar with the logs on 3CX however my best guess is that you have not (or have incorrectly configured) the outbound rule(s) on the system. https://www.3cx.com/docs/manual/sip-trunks/

That and the very obvious - you need a trunk to call outside world (SIP trunk, PSTN gateway etc).
