POTS Lines on 3CX

We are curious to see if we can use an older POTS telephone line with 3CX. Any thoughts?

Absolutely, but nothing that is officially supported. If you were to go that route I would recommend Patton

Whichever model fits your needs. They are basically sized by the number of ports. If you go into 3CX and under SIP Trunks click the 'Add gateway' button you'll see the available templates.

How many lines? I like the SmartNode 4114's for small deployments and the 4970's when dealing with T1's. But they all run the same and configuring them is the same and they are rock solid.

I typically do Grandstream HT's for fax machines for cost savings, but you can also use Patton gateways for faxing.

Is your 3CX hosted, or local? That is going to make a big difference as gateways are not supported unless local to the server, unless you can use VPN.
If you are only looking to accommodate a single PSTN line, and don't expect that to ever increase, you might try to find a linksys/Cicso SPA-3102, or even the older SPA-3000. They will do a single line, but require manual provisioning, which while not difficult, is not something everyone wants to try. Both models are no longer made, but can be found on-line. If you do pick one up, the forum has a number of posts on configuration.

An ATA is for FXS, not FXO (POTS lines).

There have been some previous posts, regarding the use of an FXO Gateway, on a hosted set-up, I don't think it was with a Grandstream. You could use a supported Gateway, connected with VPN
