We provision the phones using STUN.
I didn't see my question discussed in any of the videos or manuals.
I'm trying to delete some phones so I can reprovision them from scratch. They're my lab phones, they're here
just for me to learn the system. I hadn't used 3CX until a week ago.
I've gone to the Phone Provisioning tab of the extensions, and deleted the instance of the IP Phone. What should
be my next step? The phones still appear in the Phones list. If I browse to their IP's, they're trying to register the
account that I just disassociated them from.
Any assistance is welcome.

Hello.

Best thing is to first factory-reset the phones, and then delete them from the extension's provisioning tab.

Now you will have to reset them manually which should be fairly easy if you follow our guides per each model https://www.3cx.com/sip-phones/

I have been factory resetting, but thought that might be an extra, unnecessary step.
Now the phones prompt for username and password. Can I enter ext/pw without using the Phone
Provisioning tab? The setup doesn't seem complicated to me, but some of the phones I set up keep lapsing into Account Unregistered mode, so I want to be sure I'm not missing something.
Thanks, again.

Factory resetting is not only recommended, but it's also necessary as a sanity check because sometimes devices might not pick up all their settings (during testing / experimenting when switching them across provisioning modes). Consider it mandatory if you will, to ensure you don't run into any funny phone behavior.

The user / pass request you see has resulted from setting your phones as STUN at some point.
The system will send a request to the manufacturer's RPS server and say "hey this mac address has this provisioning URL". The phone (upon resetting) will always ask the manufacturer's server "do you have a provisioning URL for me?" and when it receives the URL of your system it contacts the PBX to get auto-provisioned into your account. This RPS entry will expire eventually in a couple of weeks.

Right before this step, you need to authenticate by entering your extension number, and voicemail pin BEFORE the system allows the phone to provision.

Note: you can skip this login screen, and provision the phone via the management console, if the PBX and phones are in the same LAN

If phones are used in STUN then config link is pushed from RPS servers on which your phone mac address is known , so if you reset the phone and try to re use it , once is linked on a network giving internet access, previous config is set once again.

If you want to be out of this loop, you need to delete mac address from rps server or keep phone out of use and unplugged for almost 14 days until RPS server clean alone mac address.
