One reason why so many customers are still using the V18 client is probably the headset integration. What’s the situation with that? Can we expect the V20 app to offer support again for general headsets via a universal headset driver anytime soon?

That would be great, because otherwise many people with older headsets that are not from well-known brands - or even well-known brands that are not yet supported (or are no longer supported) in V20 - will run into problems.

Thank you @SteveITS ! Good answers. I don't think there are many headsets delivering reliable integration via the Universal headset driver though but if there are they can make it work with the PWA client too.
 
The biggest problem for our customers is the fixed size of the v20 app. This is really very inconvenient for chat and also for switching spontaneously to video during a call.

If switching to the v20 app becomes mandatory, we not only end up with unnecessary work but also have to explain the added value - which in this case doesn’t exist - to our customers. The biggest added value for us is saving and switching between multiple accounts, but none of our customers use that.
 
The app doesn't work on our PC; it opens and then disappears, and isn't visible in the task manager either.
 
The PWA supports this.
Nice. I’ve never tried that in the PWA because it’s not shown in the web client. But if it works in the PWA, it’s good to go - assuming there are no plans to include the universal driver in the v20 app anytime soon.
 
@patrickb_de The PWA is the web client, just using Google technology to make it feel like an app. To all intents and purposes its the web client. Its literally the same code. Just running in an app like environment. The universal driver is based on web tech so not compatible with the windows softphone so it can never make it into the windows softphone which is native windows code. Personally I am not sure how useful the universal driver is and not sure how many no name brands have really tested it with the driver. Also if you sell it it must keeping working for many years and that's a whole nother discussion.

Keep in mind this headset integration is only for accepting calls via a button on the headset. Using a headset for microphone and earpiece you can use any headsets or device you like. I am not sure but I get the impression that you are referring to normal headsets you can use absolutely fine when at your desk.

The headset integration is only needed if you want to take calls whilst away from your desk. personally I don't think its worth it use a normal wired headset as keep in mind these headsets use DECT and I wouldn't want a DECT transmitter in my ear all day. But that's just me. Also they are expensive and the windows drivers they require are support intensive. And as an alternative just bring along your mobile when away from your desk and take the call on that.

If you really must have a headset with headset integration use JABRA. Its the manufacturer with consistent tech support.

Off the record (here on the forum :) ) if you really must have a headset with headset integration use JABRA. Its the manufacturer with consistent tech support, they communicate with us. We don't agree on everything but they are "there".
I know the underlying technology is the same, but I’ve never seen the universal driver in the Web Client headset integration section.

Every type of headset I sell to customers is one I’ve personally tested beforehand. For example, the current Yealink series is too heavy to wear for hours. The older WH62/66 models were also heavy, but not as heavy as the new 64 series. The comfort of placing the headset back into the base was also better on the older models with the magnetic charger compared to the Jabra-inspired design on the 64 base. Some of my customers, as well as myself, simply don’t want to use these new, heavier headsets. Poly models are also too heavy for most of my customers.

So, moving on to the next brand: Jabra. They offer good build quality and lightweight headsets, but technically they have some issues that are uncomfortable for users in their daily work. For example, I switched to an Engage 75 Mono around four weeks ago because I wanted triple connectivity. Lightweight: check. Good build and sound quality: check. Bluetooth for my mobile phone: check. But that’s where one of the biggest issues starts: the Jabra stays connected to the mobile phone’s Bluetooth even when it’s placed in the base.

So if you’re walking around your office or home and you come back into Bluetooth range, the headset will pick up your mobile calls and route the audio to the Jabra - even though it’s still in the base (Yealink does this as well). That’s really annoying if you’re used to your headset only connecting to your phone when you take it out of the base, like it works with EPOS headsets such as the IMPACT SDW series, which are also lighter and have good sound quality.

Also, if you use the overhead mono versions of Jabra headsets, many of them tend to slip down from your head during long calls while walking through the office (Germans love to walk around the office during long calls - and multitask while they’re at it. :D). I don’t know if the 10g difference between the SDW 10 HS and the Engage SE makes the difference, but it’s possible. :)

If you press the mute button on the Engage on top of the microphone, the customer can hear the clicking and touching noises beforehand. Yealink’s and EPOS’s ‘flip-to-mute’ technology is better in this regard.

These small details make a huge difference in daily use.

For me, it’s clear that I should only use and sell the officially supported “named brand” headsets to ensure they work reliably for years. But in the past, EPOS was one of the supported brands and in version 18 they work over the universal driver. I sold many of them to customers, and they’re happy with them—they don’t want to switch to Jabra, Yealink or Poly because of the issues I described. And yes, if you’ve bought a 200€ to 300€ headset, you definitely want to use the buttons on the headset to answer incoming calls.

But if the web client supports the universal driver, these customers will definitely stick with it until their headsets fall apart. I’ll check that for my “sticky EPOS customers” :D

One large client that is holding out on moving to the new Windows app, is because chat doesn't have templates, and they do a lot of the same SMS.
Moving them to PWA now, but just some feedback.

I'm sorry, but you're not right.
With a working headset integration, you can use the 3CX Client like a normal desk phone, where you don't need your mouse to accept or end a call, you just get the headset from its station. Better than that is a station, that is able to ring. But it's only able to ring with the integration, otherwise the ringing will just be on the headsets earphone so you can just hear it if you wear it at that moment, otherwise you need to use notebook loudspeaker for ringing. But as anybody know, you watch a youtube video, turn the sound louder and afterwards the ringing is way too loud. So we use the EPOS Impact D10 with a station that is able to ring and all these features only work with a working headset integration (it's the universal as well as the Sennheiser. EPOS has been Sennheiser before).

Is there any way to detect when a client is connecting on 3CX Version 18? In the Phones tab, the system only detects V20 and V16, but not V18

I’ve just tested the Web Client solution - it works! :D
You can select the universal driver there, and everything works perfectly.

Now the only remaining issue is with RDP sessions, which can still cause trouble for those customers. If someone uses the Web Client or PWA inside an RDP session with the app installed on the host, they can start calls on the host system from the webclient in the RDP session, so the audio doesn’t get tunneled through the RDP connection.
But if the Web Client is running on the host system directly, you can’t do that - you’re forced to minimize the RDP session first and start the call manually in the PWA.

@N_G “If it were possible to initiate a call from any open PWA or Web Client in another PWA or Web Client instance, that would be a major improvement - especially for users working in RDP environments.

I use the same headset heavily. My solution is to manually connect and disconnect BT from the base (center button, then navigate to connect/disconnect as needed). Great headset though.

Disconnecting from the mobile phone doesn't work here, it has to be from the base, or the base just reconnects it.

EPOS does this automatically: when the headset is in the base, the Bluetooth connection is paused for call audio. When you take it out of the base, audio streaming for calls is enabled again so the phone can't or can use the headset as device to answer calls. This is much more comfortable in everyday work situations where you frequently pick up and put down the headset and walk around the office.

At the moment, I manually disconnect the Jabra device after answering a call on my mobile phone just to get the audio back on the phone’s speaker — but I’m not sure I want to keep doing that for the next few years :D

Disconnecting and reconnecting it at the base every time I leave my desk (and come back) simply isn’t acceptable.

or in-house roaming with AI-controlled headset connections. Every time you leave the table by more than 2 meters, the headset will pause audio - okay, some ‘Germans walk around in the office’ calls will then disconnect - at least if I take my mobile phone with me while walking. :D
