Setup Preferences - DHCP Server - Router or 3CX Server

Hi All,

Just wondering what your setup preferences are for address allocation.

Let's assume use of the 3CX Debian ISO, installed on bare metal, with one router which is itself directly connected to the ISP, a single switch, and, say, 25 - 50 extensions, all with deskphones (3CX approved of course - Fanvil X3S if you like), and all users having a softphone installed on their pure Android device.

My standard assumption has been to have the router run a DHCP server. The router and 3CX Server have fixed IPs, and everything else is dynamic.

In part this is because, by default, most routers have DHCP ready to go, and the Debian ISO does not (out of the box), but I also figure I want nothing else running on the Debian Box, other than 3CX Server.

Reason for asking is that I was, myself, asked today, why I setup an install that way, and to fair, I had never considered any other option.


Question:

Does anyone prefer to have the 3CX Server handle DHCP? If so, why?

Would it be a really bad idea to have the 3CX Server handle DHCP? If so, why?

I never tried it, as 3CX tells us to put the 3CX Server totally alone on an instance/device.

Hardware ressources are kept for 3CX server use and running OS no more. As Mathieu said dedicated machine this is a prerequisite from 3CX install

You don't want your phone system fighting over resources and ports with another service on the same machine. This can cause delay in audio, bad call quality, dropped calls and ever services crushing.
You should always have your PBX on a dedicated machine or VM to avoid these issues. There are many supported scenarios for your network setup which are much more complicated than what you describe but you should always use a dedicated machine for the PBX.
