I'm new to 3CX and have had Spitfire set up a trunk for use with a local 3CX. However Spitfire say that their SIP trunks do NOT have any internet access at all and therefore I assume that the 3CX system will never update and I will lose a lot of the features of the system - like web admin access. The system is set up from a 3CX Debian ISO. None of the installers would work like this as they require updates/licence etc.

Is this normal practice for a SIP provider?

So you seem to be confusing SIP trunking with internet access. The two are different beasts and you don't need internet access unless you are getting 'Bring Your Own Bandwidth' SIP trunking which you are not. 3CX does need internet access for licensing and update purposes. So this is a networking issue and not a 3CX issue.

Googling '3CX network' returns this as the first result:

It's a little old but should point you in the right direction. If it doesn't, pay someone who understands networking to help since at least 90% of VoIP is networking.

Thanks Cobaltit - I do know the difference. The question I asked was whether SIP providers blocking all internet access on the line normal practice as it does stop updates, makes set up difficult - no remote management, limits soft phones as I see it. Seems odd that I need another internet provision on a separate line just to be able to do a non-standard segregated setup.

Especially as the provider is meant to be an excellent 3CX partner.

I'm not complaining about the excellent 3CX!

You are looking through the wrong end of the microscope. They are not blocking internet access because they aren't providing internet access in the first place. They are providing SIP service. Rather than run it over the public internet they are running over a private connection. Are you paying this provider for both internet AND SIP trunking?

Agree with Cobaltit

spitfire trunks are just sip lines just for voice - the sip network only handles sip traffic.

You would also need a normal internet connection for 3cx updates, remote clients, etc.

On the 3cx server, you would setup the default gateway as the internet router.
To route the sip traffic correctly you would create a static route on your internet router to point Spitfire sip server address towards the spitfire router
