Hello,

We want to upgrade v18 running on Windows to v20 on Linux and the guides make this look simple and straightforward enough.

Ideally we want to run the v20 instance with a restored backup in an isolated VLAN, to double check some of the restored configuration. Out of hours we would update the LAN IP on v20 to match the LAN IP of the v18 install, to allow more testing e.g. phones / calls / CRM etc.

This gives us reassurance we know what configuration changes we need to make at the point we cutover to v20 and can be sure of the migration success.

What we are not sure of is how the 3CX license will behave during this process. If we just have either v18 or v20 live at any one time, can we switch between the two versions for testing?

Thank you.

No, that wont work. Your licence will upgrade to v20 and wont work with v18 anymore.

Run a backup without your FQDN and license info and get a v20 trial and restore.

Good point, that is the way to go if you want to test your configuration.

Thank you for pointing this out - does this mean, when you do the migration, you get one attempt and no easy rollback to the v18 instance?

Correct, your licence is only valid on v20 from that point on.

I did a v18 backup without the FQDN and licence, when I did the restore in v20 it reported License failure. I did the restore at the https://ip:5015/?v=2 web page. Is there another way to perform a restore? I now have a vanilla v20 install but I cannot see anywhere to restore a file from another source?

You need to install v20 with a test licence and restore the backup after that. The Backup cant be restored to a fresh server without a license. @Alphabetic said it already.

Yes, I did understand that once I failed so I got a vanilla 3CX v20 installed but cannot see where I can import and select the v18 backup file I created.

You can ignore my stupidity....I worked out I needed to manually copy file over into the linux backup folder....I was blinded by not seeing an upload button in the web ui.
