Is it best to test the water/this product signup for the 1 year free and learn as I go.

We are not ready for a full on.

There seems to be too many technical issues we need to be ready to respond to.

Simply a Try before we buy approach. Your thoughts please?

Not really sure what the question is. Are you asking if there is something cheaper than free to test the waters with? If that is the question the answer is no. Are you asking if it is better to learn it yourself vs paying a partner to help with implementation? Only you can answer that question but it really depends on your level of technical expertise and your implementation time frame.

If you wanted to test the Pro features then you would need to spend some money to test those features as only the standard license is available for free.

up until i signed on to the forum we were short on available support from a personal point of view. Free service...not necessarily "you get what you pay for" free is not always the best alternative.

trying to determine the learning curve from a user point of view for the front office. i dont want to add more technical demands to my already stretched day.

So again, you need to make the determination on the path since the constraints seem to be on you and your workload. That being said, 3CX is fairly simple to install and administer as long as you follow one of two paths:

- Stay with-in the 3CX approved environment. This means OS/hosting platform, dialtone provider, handsets, etc
- Use a 3CX partner for implementation who can guide you as well as provide experience for items that may not be 3CX approved but work as good as or better than the 3CX approved options.

The other factor is what I mentioned regarding your implementation time frame. If your current system is smoking and could die any day now then you probably want to work with a partner. But if this a 6-12 month project and you'll have time to tinker then spinning up a free license and playing is a good way to go. You can still enlist the help of a partner just so you have a resource for the occasional question but otherwise you are free to work at your own speed.

If you look careful in the forums I'd venture to say at least 90% of the 'problems' aren't actual 3CX problems. They are network issues, poor design choices and how can I use 'xxx unsupported' device/feature/environment. Lots of people think that because they can save money with 3CX because it is inexpensive compared to to other PBX products and then want to pair it with 8 year old unsupported phones and free forum support. In reality they should be taking the money saved on the 3CX license and spend it on supported equipment and proper support from a partner.

Full disclosure I am a platinum partner but I am also a small business owner and straight shooter. So my opinions here are biased but not so much about putting coin in my pocket but as to doing things the right way.

Good luck!

You can get a pro version 30 day trial for testing on premises most likely if you ask a 3cx partner. I don't know what you need, but, if its more then just a few phones the pro features are necessary i think.
Make a setup in your home and try it out?
I recently did my first "larger?" (30 phones) setup of 3cx and was positively surprised about the small percentage of users complaints about the pbx. Not everything works as good as with the previous traditional pbx but the new phones and some of the features of 3cx are on the positive side and this makes up for the defects.

time frame is no sooner than early Fall 2018.

learning from my desk "cutting my teeth" as it were seems like a good alternative. no reason having the entire team in the dark before switching over. our current system is not broken yet. our partner has sort of gone quiet on me and no longer on the 3CX reseller list?

Well then yeah it sounds like starting with the free license is the way to go. Spin it up and have fun. If you need another partner there are plenty that participate on the forums here that would be happy to help, myself included.

Thank-you

Hello @George Dunlap

Let me just add that there is a lot of online material to help you get started and learn the system. I would recommend starting from the Academy section that explains how to install and maintain the system. https://www.3cx.com/3cxacademy/
There are also free online webinars you can watch that cover each section of the PBX. https://www.3cx.com/blog/event-trainings/
And of course for any questions or issues you can always ask in the forums.
