Solved V18 update option not available

Hi,

Something weird is happening and I can't find the answer for it.

I was running V16 on Hypervisor and saw the V18 Alpha release as option available. I prepared everything (made snap-shot, ran VM backup) and made a 3cx configure backup file. Pressed update. It instantly failed... So I investigated.

The error message did not explain why, however after logging in with CLI I noticed that the hard disc was for some reason tiny (only 10GB, don't ask), and that the system basically didn't have enough space. Instead of messing around in hypervisor, expanding the disc and then do it in linux again, I just created a new VDX with more space, and linked that as primary disc, reinstalled 3CX on Debian 10 ISO (To be clear I used the Provided ISO -> V18 Beta 2 for Linux 3CX V18 on Debian 10 ISO), ran the setup, imported the Backup and was back online in 10 minutes.

Now I am running 3CX v16.0.9 on Debian 10 and there are NO updates available. How do I get V18 (Alpha / Beta) for testing?

Version 16 does not run on Debian 10 to my knowledge

Start again - download V18 Beta 2 ISO image , link in https://www.3cx.com/blog/releases/v18-beta-2/ - install 3CX and restore your config from a previous backup

That's exactly what I did. So how is this possible?

For almost a year now, I have 3 PBX's v16 running well on Debian 10.
I know, it is not supported, but they are running fine.

I think you may have misunderstood. As Saqqara correctly mentioned, to install v18 directly (without upgrading from v16) you will have to specifically use the ISO he linked to. That ISO will deploy a Debian 10 machine and automatically launch 3CX's installation for v18. The fact that you ended up with a 3CX v16 installation on a Debian 10 machine leads me to believe you either did not use the linked ISO file or perhaps somehow didn't install it correctly.

I'd recommend taking a backup of your current v16.0.9 installation and then redeploy a new machine using the linked ISO, go through the 3CX V18 installation wizard and use the backup to restore during installation.

It should automatically install 3CX V18 Beta 2 with your previous configuration restored.

I just checked - I used this ISO debian-10.5.0-amd64-netinst-3cx Instead of the Beta 2 version. Would that be the problem?

Anyway, I will re-initiate the ISO install (now the BETA2) and update you.

Yes, that would explain it! That ISO was for a tech demo back in July of 2020 we released for 3CX v16 on Debian 10. The specific configuration scenario was never officially supported as we opted for a new major release (3CX v18) along with the transition to a newer Debian version (Debian 10).

The update was not presented due to the fact that it targets supported configurations meaning a combination of Debian 9 + 3CX v16. Another reason is that the update does not only upgrade 3CX v16 to v18 , but it actually also upgrades the OS from Debian 9 to Debian 10.
