Hey folks, just checking in as I'm having a minor issue with the SMS implementation. This might just be a provider problem (Flowroute) but I can't seem to get specifically (Apple or Microsoft) account verification codes to send SMS codes to either a direct extension with SMS enabled (that has the corresponding provider DID - messaging enabled) or to a group queue for a company-wide number.

Anyone else encountered this? Any workarounds?

The SMS API from providers is not meant for this. There's a good chance that shortcodes are being ignored.

MFA messages we use ourself in some departments and route them to queue so the department can share one SMS login to some portals which shall not be bound to a private mobile number. However, we use this with Telnyx. Not sure if there a limitation in Flowroute and best to check with their support.
General SMS inbound is working?

Apple in particular almost never works unless the SMS is delivered directly to a carrier that Apple officially supports. So they do not route their 2 factor SMS messages through any of the sms clearing house providers so you will never get this working on most VOIP providers. Blame Apple, they must add each approved carrier to their own allow list before SMS for 2 factor authentication will flow. They will not approve voip providers, only real mobile carriers. Even after porting a real mobile number it will stop working. It is likely they do this at the switching level looking up the home location routing info of the number in real time and only deliver if going to an approved gateway.

Sorry but Apple and some other institutions like Banks will not deliver to VOIP based numbers. Flowroute has no power to fix this. Only Apple can fix it and they have blocked voip carriers on purpose.

I had a suspicion this was the case, especially with Apple, but glad to get some confirmation. Thank you, everybody, for the feedback regarding this issue. General SMS inbound and outbound is working as intended, so far it's just been those MFA codes that have been the only problem we've had. It's not a huge concern as we have other means of securing verification codes (Google will continue to work fine) for MS/Apple specifically. Thanks!

We get short codes delivered to our VoIP network, in fact I just created an apple account with my direct line and received the message. We gave 3CX our API documentation for SMS integration so hopefully our customers can start texting soon.apple codecover.png
