I am currently using an "unsupported" SIP provider in my on-prem setup without issue. I am considering moving to the hosted setup, but it appears that the hosted service only allows for the use of "supported" or "preferred" SIP providers.

Does this mean the hosted service only allows SIP providers that have commercial contracts with 3CX, regardless of technical compatibility?

With more and more SIP providers offering hosted PBX options, customers would be more likely to switch to a SIP provider's hosted PBX product rather than having to go through the process of changing SIP providers just to stick with 3CX.

Hi @mpemberton the idea of using supported providers is to ensure that it works out of the box with the 3CX. The supported providers have done interoperability tests with 3CX in such a way that the behavior of these trunks is known, their limitations that may be present and as well as provide configuration templates where administrators will simply have to fill in their account authentication data. Any inconvenience that may arise regarding their service, the provider will be able to work on internally with 3CX with the interoperability team.

Unsupported VoIP providers can lead to different problems in which the administrator of that system must support and contact the provider used directly so that they can correctly configure the inbound and outbound parameters and other settings needed by them, in turn there may be other limitations which would not guarantee correct operation.

Self-hosted or On Premise installations can still use generic trunks, however it is not recommended or supported. Using supported/preferred voip providers you will guarantee the customer quality of service, support and optimal communication.

Found it, it was in the partner forum, from the CEO, in March:

With 3CX hosted you can now use any generic provider as well if you wish
Have not tried myself, as we provide our own hosting.
