Windows Server Upgrade

I read that we can backup and restore to a new OS (which is obvious), but my question is regarding an in-place upgrade. While I will do a backup, also, can I just in-place upgrade Windows Server 2012R2 to Server 2019 without issue? Theoretically.....

It should work but likely not officially supported. I would first do a 3CX backup in case things go bad. For two of my smaller customers I have done an in-place upgrade of Windows 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro and 3CX worked fine after.

have done almost 12 in place upgrade from win7 to W10, used mediatoolscreator1909 and never got a problem , on my own computer with a very loaded config, i was scared to a no end migration and finally everything gone fine till the end.
one time I got some software not working anymore on w10 but it was very few.

There is no easy in place upgrade for windows 2012 to windows server 2019, and if its a 3CX server, you might as well convert it to debian, it will free up your windows server license from the 3cx server and make it easier to update and maintain at the same time.

You can but firstly, generate a full 3CX backup and take it off the server. Proceed with your OS upgrade and in case something goes wrong you can always start fresh and restore your 3CX backup. If you are also upgrading from V15.5 to V16 you will need to reinstall the PBX too so take that into consideration.


Given the choice I would pick Debian to reduce my resources and maintenance intervals, but I would choose to start fresh if going with Windows Server. Bring it up to date, ensure my networking is done (if needed) and any automated updates are disabled (to avoid unexpected downtime).
I would manually reboot it once a month after installing my security updates and such.

I thought about switching to Debian, as well. Just not as easy to troubleshoot for me if there are issues, but I will definitely take that into consideration, also.
