Experience with Android Cell phones attached in wifi only to use 3CX app?

Hello EveryOne,

i would like ask you what are your feed-backs and experience about the use of dedicated smartphones attached only to Wifi, without any SIM card, to use them like a DECT phone with the 3CX app.

We have deployed a customer with this concept, it's a little factory, with several Wifi AP and users have smartphones only attached to Wifi,
and the solution works when the customer doesn't move fast,
i mean it's a factory and they move inside with some electrical truck pallets.

We are using Unifi Wireless system with a controller and all settings for wifi, power, band optimization, fast roaming have been applied, despite that, the user are often not reachable or disconnected when moving fastly inside the factory ( it's a big open space).
When i perform some test and walk with smartphone inside the factory, everything works fine, i am never disconnected, but when the user use it and move fast with the elecrical trunk pallets, connection is lost or poor.

Based on the information found on internet, the decision to move from an wifi AP to another one is took by the device and not by that antenna that pushes the device to a better AP, so that means i suspect that the android device is not handling the handhover correctly, or not fast enough....

We gave to one user an pure wifi phone Yealink and the behavior seams be better, but we are not sure if it's a feeling or if i'ts really better.

have someone any experience about that kind of setup?
do you think it should works, or it is definitively a bad idea to perform an install on this way?
or have you some tricks to optimize the handhover from the android smartphones?

Might be worth trying 802.11r if your devices and access points support this. On unifi dashboard this is fast roaming. We have found that some customers this works better with than others so could definitely be worth an experiment

(own opinion)
WIFI is not made for roaming, once the connection has been made between the device and accesspoint the device will stay there for as long as possible. It could be that the device is next to another access point and still will not jump over and will stay on the existing (bad) connection. However, yes we have installed this also on WIFI with Samsung mobile devices, and it works great for the sales company with 3 rooms, where the people do not move a lot and coverage is perfect. Another steel company with factory does also use this, but the phone is always at the same 'desk' location, and will not move around, also here it works perfect. For moving or fast moving communication, the only answer would be DECT.

thank you for your detailed input, i have the same mindset, voWifi is not so efficient that DECT.

On our setup, everything is activated on unifi side, fast roaming, BSS transition and Band steering, in despite of that, the devices takes a long time to reconnect to the next AP, what is not acceptable at all for VoIP...

well we will see how to change this project on our side

Hello Hugo_Sycom,

What did help me somewhat (not perfect), is to move all the mobile APPS (Sansung devices, our case), to a new SSID, so that only 3CX APP connections are using this SSID, no printer, scanner, PC or other device does connect.
Not sure if this is what you have, but we did not in the first case, and have made this change, and got some inprovement.

thanks, this is how it's implemented, there is 3 differents SSID, 1 for prod, 1 for guest and 1 only for VoIP,
it's like that since the initial implementation, but still with same behavior.

Also keep in mind that on a factory floor with a lot of industrial electrical equipment, comes EMF interference. Quite probably a lot more than a typical office or home depending on the type of workplace. DECT tends to be much better in those spaces. If you have spare DECT devices you could try it and compare at least to see which works better for that location.

Note: You will also need an SBC if the PBX is in the cloud / remote.
