HI there

I am trying to do a fresh install on a VPS using the image in here https://www.3cx.com/docs/manual/installing-debian-linux-pbx/ and also tried using Debian 10 image, both are failing at the exact same point, "download debconf preconfiguration file' and the message is "Failed to retrieve the preconfiguration file".

When I use the link provided for the file in the error popup, and if I post it in my web browser, the file contents is displayed instead of downloading. Could that be the issue?

Is it on a supported VPS? Can you try to do an install somewhere else, under a different VPS environment or perhaps behind a different firewall?

Hi cobaltit

Thanks for your reply.
I am not sure what you mean by "Is it on a supported VPS?", How would I know?
The VPS is Intel, and should has enough resources.
The issue that it fails to download the file. But the URL given, is valid for viewing the file. So I am not sure what the issue is.
Also, I opened all the recommended ports, however I don't think downloading the file is being blocked by the firewall (unless I am wrong)..

Thanks for your help!

Are you using Google's DNS servers?

installing on a VPS not a virtual machine
Then it's unlikely to work, I'd expect. If it's not a VM then it's presumably a container? At the very least it's unsupported. 3CX has some hosted options, included with Pro or Enterprise licensing.

I have a feeling this is not the issue. Something is wrong with the 3CX Debian ISO.
During the installation, it is trying to download the preconfig file and it is failing to do so. It seems that the link in the script is not pointing to the proper download location.
I can understand what you are saying after the installation is completed, but not the way the error is happening.

I have a feeling it is the issue. Hundreds of 3CX installs are done daily, and you don't see the forums filled with the same complaint. You downloading the file from your web browser which is not behind the same firewall and on the same network as the Ionos VPS proves the the file works. Try one of the supported providers.
