Hi Guys,
We have noticed that the 3CX system does not currently have a way of being able to visually see when the phone system is in day or night mode (Office Hours or Out of Office Hours).

This is a huge pain in the backside for all of us who come from a traditional TDM based phone system. We have worked on several traditional (digital and electronic) phone systems over the years and all of them have had this functionality as standard where you are able to program a button on the reception phone (or as many phones as is required) to allow the user to put the system into day or night mode, some system even offer a Day, Day2 and Night mode which can be very handy.

3CX have a very useful feature where you can program the systems office hours so it will automatically go into the night mode when the time is outside of these hours, but sometimes customers need the ability to be able to manually put the system into day or night mode.
Luckily the guys at 3CX have allowed the use of a short code which will allow you to force the system into day or night mode or put the system back into the default auto mode:-
  • *641 - force the system to use "In Office Hours"
*642 - force the system to use "Out of Office Hours"
*64 - force the system to use "Default Office Hours" (auto mode)
This is great, but there is still no visual indication on the IP Phones to show what mode the system is in.

I recently contacted the support department to see if there was a way of getting the developers to look into this as I have noticed there are lots of forum posts relating to this very frustrating issue and they advised me to post on the 3CX ideas forum and get it up-voted.
I even contacted out account manager at 3CX as well as their CEO (Nick Gelea) and they both advised me to do the same, so this is what I am doing.

I have heard from Nick and he said they may be able to do something on the 3CX client as it may be easier to implement, but I don't think this will suit most people's needs as we really need the phone system to be able to light a button on a phone or change the colour of the button if the phone supports that, so I have come up with a couple of possible ways that the development team could easily implement this on the system so that we can start to sell more systems as direct replacements for their aging TDM systems.

The ways I have come up with to get this working could be as simple as a global extension (say 799) as the older 3CX v14 used to show the system extensions (under System Status > System Extensions).

The global extension number could be programmed to be as follows:-
  • Available when the system is in Day Mode (In Office Hours)
Busy when the system is in Night Mode (Out of Office Hours)
This would then allow us to be able to program that extension on the reception phone (or as many phones as required) and give a clear visual indication of what mode the system is in.

We use the Yealink T46G IP Phones in the office (or will do when we can finally get a visual indication for Day / Night mode) and they will show an extension as green when it is not in use or red when it is busy, we also have some clients who have Cisco VoIP phones and they behave in exactly the same way.

It would be even better if they were able to make the button have the ability of being able to show an extension status and being able to dial a short code to put the system into day or night mode like this guys has managed to do with the Asterisk phone system and a Cisco IP Phone:-

I hope many of you will see this post and vote it up as I know there are a lot of us on the forums asking about this feature and requesting that it gets implemented as soon as possible as it would be a very valuable addition to the 3CX system and I am sure it will allow us all to sell more system to customers.

@Nick Galea - for me, the key here is the visual indicator.

BLF seems the best possible option, press to go 'away/closed' press again for 'available/open'. On my other system I often have 2 such keys on the managers phones for early close and for holidays as well as keys to record the message for those two modes.

Less optimal alternatives:
A)
Give me a web status page that doesn't require authorization. I'll put a raspberry pi on the wall with a 7" screen, or I'll parse it and light up an LED. Then I can use a web client switch, or a dial code etc to flip back and forth.

B)
Give me a distinctive ring for ring groups. I can put a 2-3 rings ring group in with a distinctive ring so employees can recognize the after-hours mode. This is a good feature to add regardless, but would work in a pinch combined with a web client 'away/vacation mode'

C)
Put it in the webclient. This is in last place specifically because it doesn't give any indication of the system being in closed mode.

Just a thought here ..... A night mode BLF as such is actually a waste of time ...
You program the system to automatically go to night mode at a certain time and tell end users that when the system is installed ..
The reason you would need to manually put the system into any other mode would actually be for early close / unscheduled persistent closing.
Bear with me here ....
An away mode with BLF or similar is actually more practical where you can make the system do "something different" like announce we are closed this week for renovations, please leave a message ...

Many of my customers have flexible holiday hours and want the phones to be on open for some limited but unknown hours. So the standard out of hours logic needs that toggle.

If a customer mis-configured the times and they are actually open then need to visually see that the system is closed, and be able to toggle it.

The night mode toggle is absolutely required and not a waste of time.

An added feature of special away mode with option to record a temporary greeting would be a nice add.

Ok, that makes sense.
I haven't come across that before. All mine are simply 9-5 in office .. outside that, out of office hours ... But really needing away mode for unforseen circumstances or early finishes.

I also want the Out of Office extension to be a toggle. I don't want to set one BLF to be "In Office" and another to be "Out Office". Hit the BLF once, it announces the new state, and then all the BLF lights change to indicate the new state.

I have completely given up on this feature. And pretty much 3CX. I have moved almost all my clients to Freepbx. There are just some features that make life easier that 3CX needs to catch up with.
We work with a lot of accountants and lawyers. They don’t always work 9-5. Especially during tax season. They want to control the phones when they are coming in and leaving, and don’t want to test it and make sure it’s working

This is a very important feature. Does the orange "In Progress" tag at the top of this thread mean that the feature is in a queue for development? If so, what are the normal wait times between a good idea and 'in progress' and a newly released feature?

I see this idea is in progress. thanks. I can't see any notes on this in the V16 Beta release (build 16.0.0.1375) change log.
Is it too soon to make it into the future production release?

Halleluja, good to see that this is now going to be impletented.
Please Development team try to include this into V16!
There is nobody I know who would not appreciate this

I think that a BLF to know if the 3CX is in office hours or outside office hours is necessary, I hope that in the next firmware version will put that option.

A BLF would be greatly appreciated.
Several PBXs that we replace would use this feature.

I can't beleive this simple feature is still not implemented. Come on guys at 3CX, get with the program...

+1 from me - would be great to have.

Our office hours very, and sometimes people like to work later than normal. During this time, inbound calls still need to ring to entire floor. On our current Cisco CME system, The last agent to leave turns on night mode. Night mode is indicated on the display on the phone on the banner. During the day the banner just displays our company's name. Our Cisco CME does this no problem. 3CX needs to do this too
