3CX, phone line, VoIP & GrandStream 488

Good morning guys.
I got my 488 yesterday. So here is my story:
First mistake I made is that I connected phone & line wires wrong. That was because I was too lazy to check wires before connecting them. And my phone did not work, no tone, just hum sound.
But I was able to connect on 488 through my PC and 192.168.2.1 address, enabled access through WAN, disconnected from PC and access it through WAN’s new IP address. Then I set-up FXS port, and after 20 min I got connected to 3CX phone server. But, when I started setting FXO port I had to do firmware upgrade because of that “FXO one stage dialing” option. So, I tried to force firmware upgrade by setting 488 to every 1 minut but it kept coming back as 60 minutes. So, demonofsteel it should take more than 60 minutes after you connected 488 to WAN to upgrade itself. Still, you had to make update to the new external TFTP servers address 168.75.215.190 instead of fm.grandstream.com/gs. In my case it worked. So my firmware change from 1.0.3.64 to 1.03.3.96 and I got “FXO one stage dialing” option. I set that up and under STATUS menu for 488 I saw FXS & FXO registered.
But I was still bothered by hum sound and I started looking for problem. I though that my phone makes problems so I wanted to plug in old phone and then I found out what I did. I switched cables back and I heard tone on my phone.

I hope you did not return 488 back for a replacement yet.
Here's what I would do:
1. Check on router to see if 488 is connected to WAN. My Netgear has "attached devices" menu where I can see who's connected. For 488 you will have something like -- in name and it's IP address. (I was able to see it on the list, but this morning it was not there, but I know it is on network. So, no big deal.)
You said that you did not change anything so you will not be able to connect to 488 through WAN since default value is set to NO.
2. Disconnect from WAN and connect to your PC. Try to release all IP addresses from your PC (type ipconfig/release) as it is explained in 488 manual. Then type ipconfig/renew (to renew IP addresses) and try to connect to 488 with 192.168.2.1 address from your browser.
Keep us informed.

Ok, guys, here's my problem. I set 488 to have virtual extension 111 in 3CX. I set all calls to go from PSTN to 111 (in 488 set-up menu). Now, in 3CX I set up Reception (ext 800) and told "Route inbound calls in office hours" to it. So, when a call comes from PSTN it gets forwarded to 800 (Reception) and the you can choose extension from there. For test, I made 101, 102 & 103 extensions. Each extension is set to forward to VoiceMail in case no one answers the call.
I called from my cell phone, got "Reception", choosed 101 and "since no one was at home" call was transfered to VoiceMail. So it worked fine. When call comes from PSTN I see on my 3CX Client an inbound call from extension 111.
I set up in 3CX that all calls which start with 0 go through VoIP line (works) and all calls that start with 9 to go through PSTN line (does not really work). If I try to call phone on 488 I press 9 (??!?) and phone rings. If I type 111 from 3CX client "destination not found" message appears. (?!?)
But, if I press for. ex. 912484557859 (9 - go through PSTN line, 1 - country code, 248-city code, etc.) I get a call on my phone and it says caller ID - 101 & shows my home phone number (I put this number to Identification field when I set up PSTN line).
So, finally, here is my question.
1. Can I set-up my phone to have an extension different than 488 extension (which is 111) and how should I reach to it?
2. How to set up call to go through PSTN when I press 9 in front of number I am dialing.

Hi stekicar, check you have the accounts in the HT488 the right way round. I use 5 for routing via PSTN and it works, and the extension on the HT488 is 102 and if I call that number the extension rings.

Its a bit late for me to have a look at this but I'll have a look in ihe morining UK time.

Phil

Maybe I am missing something. Do I have to have two different SIP numbers for FXS & FXO or just one?
Just for test, I made two different numbers: virtual extension 111 for PSTN line (in 3CX & FXO menu) and ext. 104 for Phone line (extension in 3CX and FXS in 488 menu). I misplaced this settings previously and also I was using same virtual extension for both accounts. Thank you for a hint ("accounts" - plural)!
After i did this I was able to call to & from phone (aka ext. 104). Ha!
But I still have a problem to transfer calls through PSTN line. If I press 9 my phone rings, just like I dialed 104.

Here is the log insertion:
23:33:00.734 Call::Terminate [CM503008]: Call(163): Call is terminated
23:33:00.718 Call::RouteFailed [CM503014]: Call(163): Attempt to reach [sip:[email protected]:5060] failed. Reason: Not Found
23:33:00.718 CallCtrl::onSelectRouteReq [CM503013]: Call(163): No known route to target: [sip:[email protected]:5060]
23:33:00.703 CallCtrl::onIncomingCall [CM503001]: Call(163): Incoming call from Ext.102 to [sip:[email protected]:5060]

It looks for SIP number 9 which does not exist. Yet, my phone (ex. 104) rings. This makes no sense at all for me.

Well my set up in the HT488 is

Basic page has

Number of Rings 0 (but they recommend 1)
PSTN access code:5 (this bridges FXO to FXS instead of going via 3cx when the extension calls PSTN the recommended 3cx set up leaves his empty)
Forward to VoIP 10001 Thisis my gateway virtual extension.
FXO One Stage Dialing yes.

The FXS port has simply the of 3cx server address, ext number 102 and password

The FXO has the 3cx server address, Gateway virtual extension as above 10001 and its password.

Ensure you use a different Sip port in FXS and FXO and ensure that the sip port used in FXO is correspondingly entered in the voip gateway configuration in 3cx for this gateway.

In the gateway configuration,
I have line configuration as

External number ID as required
Authentication ID is the virtual extension 10001
Password for this virtual extension

In Edit Voip gateway details I have

Gateway Hostname or IP IP address of HT488

Gateway Port (default is 5060) 5062

In outbound rules I have a rule set up so that 5 is recognised as an outbound PSTN call.

That’s it, and all seems to work fine.

I call the extension number and it rings, if I predial 5 or enter a number beginning with 5 calls go out via PSTN.

Phil

Thank you Philco.
My setting were the same as yours, except I had port 5060 instead of 5062 for 488 in 3CX settings. Since I changed it to 5062 my calls were able to go through PSTN line.
Laso, I had a problem with not hearing anything when calls were made from outside through PSTN and when I checked option "PBX delivers audio" under "line management" it worked just fine. This is more like a FYI for demonofsteel.
Once again, thank you. Will keep monitoring this post.

A comment for selected text:
If "PBX delivers audio"=off for both devices then is it interoprtability issue related to implementation of PSTN gateway and/or phone. "PBX delivers audio"=on is designed to resolve this problem (PBX completelly controls SDP negotiations and RTP streams).
This behavior is described in technical manual. (See "Media Server modes")

Thanks a lot for your feedback

HI stekicar, just got back to keyboard.

I had to set the gateway up using generic version so that PBX delivers audio was selectable (default anyway) too, should have mentioned that.

Pleased you got it going.

Phil

P.S. thanks Stepan for the post.

I am back with a question.
I was on a business trip last 3 days. And I was wondering, if there was a way to use my 3CX to make international calls over VoIP with my cell? Something like, dial home phone, type some extension number, get VoIP signal and dial international.
Is this possible with 3CX. I will try to explore this but just in case if someone knows ...

It is a feature called DISA, I am not sure if it is implemented yet, on 3CX. :roll:
I dont see it yet on the features list. And yes, it is a cool feature!

nope, DISA is not implemented in 3CX, but it made it's apparition in the "Feature request" forum about a month ago if I remember correctly.

Update for my situation: HT-488 was totaly not working at all, it was sent back last week to the seller, I expect the seller to receive it this week, then I expect the seller to wait 1 week before sending a new unit and 1 week for the shipping to me... At least, I'll have a complete DIY for configuring my HT-488 later.

Thanks guys.
