5.5.1 Authentication Required when testing email address

I am in the process of signing up for a free trial of PBX Express. When I get to the screen that asks for an email address for sending messages (the last field is for the SMTP password) and enter my values, then press Test it shows Error Details. When I press Details I am told the SMTP server returned 5.5.1 Authentication Required.

I do not know what to do at that point. I have a valid gmail account; it is set to allow less secure apps.

Any ideas?
