Backup and Restore to move server

Hi,

I have tried three times to use the backup and restore method to move a 3CX server from one place to another and every time on the restore part the system just gives up half way through the stage after the file has been uploaded to the web UI. From the Debian top I can see that all the memory and swap space 4GB RAM and 4GB SWAP all get taken up and once this is full the CPU usage of the pbx process stops and the screen will show working but it's not doing anything.

Has anyone encountered this? Is the method brute force assign as much RAM/swap as the size of the backup file (30GB?) I am backing up from the latest debian version to the same version on another server.

Since your backup file is very large, you can try again but instead of using the Web UI setup, choose the Command line setup and let us know how it goes.

If the process stops again due to reaching the resources limit, an alternative would be to create a new backup without the recordings (which I imagine take the most space) and once you have restored successfully, the recordings can now be copied over

I did manage to get the system to restore providing it with 30GB of RAM! I also had another system which was 90GB, so that needed 90GB of RAM/Swap. With previous versions of 3CX, I am sure you had to bring the recordings over in the backup or they'd be outright lost?

With version 15.5 this restore process did need quite a bit of memory but it didn't need almost the same amount as the size of the backup, I think someone's changed something! If you would like to see this for yourselves, use a large backup from the latest version and apply it to the same version (this is on the linux install), have half the RAM and swap space total to the backup size and hit restore, as soon as the memory and vmemory runs out the process just stops, rather than continuing at a slower pace writing out to disk and then adding more to memory.

As you can imagine, this can be a bit of a worry to a customer with limited resources in house.

Thankfully I managed to get it to work through some struggling but beware if you have a backup file with recordings and you need to restore it, if it's large you need a lot of swap space which is slow or RAM in order to have a quick restore.

Hi,

We would recommend in case the backup file is very large, that you do it without the recordings and import them later. In V16 there is way to convert/rediscover the recordings so long as the filenames have not been modified, making it easier/faster to restore a backup and then bring the recordings back afterwards.

When the files are back in their folder, you need to create a new Parameter from Settings, named RECS_SYNC_REQUIRED and set the value to 1. Your management console will give you the option to convert them which will rediscover all recordings:
