Yesterday we experienced an outage of our server which is hosting our 3CX system. Fortunately the service came back after a few minutes but it happend during main business hours. What is the best way to prepare for a major outage of the 3CX system. Does anyone have a solid business continuity plan in place to cover this scenario?

In terms of 9s of service availability, 99.99% means 4.22 minutes a month a service loss is tolerated by a hosting provider. To get to the next 9 (99.999%) commonly the price goes up quite a bit to accomplish it.

However, many just focus on the service it self but not how a customer can consume it from the office.
  1. Coverage for Power Outages
  2. Coverage for Firewall Outages
  3. Coverage for Switching/WiFi Outages
  4. Coverage for ISP Outages
Once all this is covered, then I would start working on the extra 9 in the cloud which is general more unlikely to happen (given a good hosting service is been selected) then any of the other 4 mentioned above.

One last advice, build a bare mettel reconstruction plan and test it at least once a year. Enable auto backup in 3CX and save this somewhere outside of the instance and your hosting provider. 3CX is quick and simple to redeploy anywhere, to rebuild your configuration is not!

Depending on your set up, we have hyper v replication so If a server dies we can failover quickly.

Again, depending on set up and size, if you were running PBX on a Pi you would just move the SD to another Pi that was in situ.

As mentioned, just ensure you have a backup and the recovery wont be a problem.
