I'm setting up a new PBX, it's quite small in terms of number of users so the minimum spec of 2 vCPU / 2Gb should be fine. This is on GCE, and the project will only have a single VM in it.
I've not done this for a while and the options appear to have become more complicated - I'm finding picking the appropriate tier on GCE confusing.
I've seen suggestions online that both N1 and E2 are the best options... The shared vCPU thing is particularly confusing.
E2 small would appear to fit the bill (2 vCPU, 2Gb) but this is a shared-core machine type and Google says you need "At least 2 VMs if you want to commit to e2-small resources", whereas this project will contain a single VM. The cost is listed as $16 per month, so I'm assuming if I run a single machine I'll still be billed for 2... at least I think so, I can't see any way of confirming this. I'm also concerned this is simply going to be too underpowered (I don't know this, I'm just guessing). I do have other projects with VMs in them, but I'm unsure as to whether the sharing of resources crosses project boundaries.
Then there's E2 medium, which has 2 vCPU, but 4Gb memory which is more than I need. That runs at $32 per month (so the same cost as 2 x E2 small). I suppose I could choose E2 medium as a base and then lower the memory to 2Gb saving about $5.50 per month from that price.
E2 high cpu also seems to fit the bill with 2vCPU / 2Gb, but that's $46.53 per month.
Then there's N1... N1 also offers shared-core machines, but these don't seem to be appropriately spec'd, although I can't see any mention of the same limitation as E2 shared-core where you need at least 2 x VMs. I'm thinking these are not a viable option.
Finally, there's N1 high cpu 2, which has 2 vCPU / 1.8Gb. At $66.58 and presumably needing to up that 1.8Gb to 2Gb, this seems an expensive option - to the point where I'm wondering if I'm missing something between this and an E2 high CPU for more than $20 per month less.
Can anyone shed some light on the best choice in terms of spec and value?
I'm leaning towards E2-medium / E2-high-cpu, but I wanted to get the insights of anyone who does this more regularly than I do.
I realise I can change the spec later, I just want to get it as close to correct right out of the gate, and make sure it's right before looking at any CUDs.
