So this might be a ridiculous question but....
If you have a client with poor internet is there any advantage in hosting the 3CX somewhere else and running the office over SBC to it or does it not make any difference?

What do you mean by poor internet - slow speeds or high latency

As to where you have the server - it does not really matter where you place the server you will still use the same amount of bandwitdh per external call

Yes hosting 3CX will provide high speed internet to the server, but you have the slower link between the host and the office. SBC does not decrease your bandwidth requirements

If high latency, then you are probably going to get broken up calls and there is nothing you can do.

Possibly. If your provider does not support G.729 then moving 3CX to the cloud and then using G.729 on the extensions might have some bandwidth savings if that's the concern. But if dealing with latency/packet loss then you aren't going to realize any benefits. If your provider does support G.729 make sure you are using that to see if it helps in your current configuration.

If by chance you can use a better internet connection from mobile router, then you can run 3CX on cloud and use SBC behind mobile router, it works fine .

I've already saved a customer using this solution , he got a very very bad DSL line with no bandwith , i installed a Mobile router with external antennas to increase signal and now we have symetrical 100Mb/s link bandwith over 4G. his previous DSL was 1mb/s DL and 128Kb/s UL on best days.

If the client has poor internet then it might make more sense to have the PBX local, so that the only traffic they have to worry about is mainly trunk calls (if they are using an internet based provider, and all phones are local).

Hi, @JohnS_3CX
IMO you are right and wrong same time , of course local pbx take advantage for internal calls, but generally a PBX is first use for external calls, so if poor internet and no way to have good quality call or worse, in that case this is not a solution.

in my previous scenario , my client was with so poor and shitty DSL line that it was impossible for him to hope having calls with a trunk. Now with 4G router he's alive for phone and internet use like he never had before.

Yes it will really depend per-case, although the OP did not mention a trunk provider and their capabilities. And if a gateway was involved then bandwidth is no longer a concern. Again, its per-case

I would think "it depends," for instance if there is a 1:1 ratio for trunk to extension use then usage should be basically the same. If the usage scenario is 20 queued calls and 5 extensions then I would think hosting externally should save bandwidth. The SBC will route internal audio itself so it doesn't leave the LAN, so that is a slight savings on internal calls. If the scenario is, say, 20 remote workers connecting from home/hotel/etc. then that usage would not be on the office Internet connection. And so on.

If internet is horrible for voice and no wireless option makes sense you can still use 3CX on-premise with a VoIP gateway and get your dial tone the old fashioned way - POTS lines or PRI circuit at the site. One day that issue should be resolved and you can move 3CX to the cloud. We have done this many times, and one reason we love 3CX.

In France Pots line are not sold any more since last year and PRI are ending in november so just VOIP

One voip technology cost less for operators than several generations pbx and systems to maintain

Whether you use an SBC or an on-prem PBX, if you're dealing with SIP trunks across the Internet, you will still have to overcome the ISP's circuit issues (latency and/or packet loss).

It's not a 3CX solution, but we recommend Velocloud to our customers with hosted 3CX, or any hosted VoIP deployment. It has made a huge difference in the call quality for those with poor Internet service.
