Hi,

I've seen in few posts that you have to use the backup at the time of the installation and once the installation is complete you cant use the backup anymore.
Can someone please give me some clarity on this?

For instance, we have 2 instances.
One is v15.5 SP6 running on windows 10
Second one is v16 running on Debian.

Can the backup from v15.5 be used on v16 so that both the system have the same configuration?
Just to let you know, the v16 is already configured.

Thank you

Hello,

No it cannot. You have to install using the backup. If you try to restore a 15.5 backup on an already working 16 instance, it will either fail or cause instability on your 16.

If done during installation, all the procedures to convert and adapt the V15 backup to the V16 fresh install will take place in order to ensure smooth running.

Since your V16 is Debian it should not take too long to reinstall 3CX. you just have to purge the installation and start it again from the command line.

Let me know if you need instructions and I will be glad to assist.

@JohnS_3CX Thank you for the information.
I already have a working v16, can you tell me what are the steps to reinstall 3cx with the backup from v15.5?
Thank you.

Just to let you know, we are running it on VM, and we are using perpetual license with a custom FQDN.

You can build a new VM for V16 and use our ISO to install fresh: https://www.3cx.com/docs/manual/installing-debian-linux-pbx/

Take a full V15.5SP6 backup off the old instance, and shut it down.

You can use the backup during the V16 installation to restore your system
https://www.3cx.com/docs/manual/configuring-your-pbx/

When you are done, ensure that your firewall rules are updated to point at the new instance, and apply to the new ports range (RTP has increased since V15.5): https://www.3cx.com/docs/ports/

Once you are happy all is up and running and any pending updates for V16 are done, go ahead reprovision your phones so they will reconnect to the PBX. This may be avoided if you can use the same IP as the old machine, before you start the install.

Hi,
Isn't this same as a new install?
What happens to the already configured instance?

This is a new install on a new VM, there will not be an already installed instance.
The difference is what you will choose here:
13177

His other instance is on another machine that will be shut down.

@JohnS_3CX

we have the same situation.
2 seperate instances, seperate ip address, seperate FQDN. But we wanted to make the exact replica of the production server in terms of configuration.
So We created a 3cx instance and it is running v16, but we didn't do a restore from the v15.5 backup.
Now, what can be done with this new instance that is running V16? It is v16 on Debian.

Do we have to uninstall 3cx and then install from scratch?

Thank you.

maybe ours is a slightly different situation.
I would like to know what can be done on the V16 install (on which we forgot to use the backup during installation).

If I have to start from scratch. What all has to be done?
How do I remove the install? Do I need to restart vm after removing 3cx? and then start again?

Yes, since you want a replica with separate licensekey /ip / FQDN you will need to restore using a backup that was made without ticking the option of "License Key Information, FQDN & Conference"

Ensure you have elevated privileges of course by using sudo su when you log in and before running any of the below commands:

Run apt purge 3cxpbx and this will remove your current instance from the machine.

You can then reinstall it by running apt update first and then run apt install 3cxpbx

This should reinstall the system at which point you can select to restore from the aforementioned backup file by following the above linked guides. I recommend to read them first before you proceed.

Since I'll be using root for installation, i believe sudo isn't necessary?

also do I need to restart vm after uninstalling 3cx before proceeding with install?

Yes, should not be necessary if you are root.

A reboot can't hurt, but you can still go ahead without it.

Since all these changes have been done during the first install, I believe this doesn't have to be done again?

Correct, just make sure the port settings are mapped to the IP for the new machine, not the old one

@JohnS_3CX Once we create the new instance and restore the backup from v15.5. Can the backup from this new machine be used on the v16 running on Debian?
Since the backup from the new instance will also be v16, it should work on the v16 on debian. Isn't that right?

This is just a random thought, that came into my mind.

Lets just say that our production server is Server 1(v15.5).
The v16 on debian on which we forgot to use the backup is Server 2 and,
The new install of v16 as Server 3.

While creating the new install(Server 3) we use the backup from Server 1(v15.5) and complete the installation.
Once installation is complete, we take a backup of Server 3(v16).
Can this backup be used with the Server 2, as they are both v16?

Since our production server has a professional license and has Queues, Ring Groups etc, what all should I be careful about.
i believe I can get a temporary production license to make sure that there will be no issues with restoring the backup and without losing any features that we are already using?

Or will all the settings be same even if I use a Standard license?

The licence defines what features get turned on / off.

The backup contains settings regardless (because you could potentially upgrade/downgrade license at any time)

Thank you.
What i meant to say is that with Production License we get features like Queues and call recordings, so if I'm using a Standard license on the server while restoring the backup from v15.5(Pro license) and then taking a backup of the new server(standard license), will this backup contain all the features?

Is it only a matter of switching the license version to get back all the features that we need?
That's all.
And I hope what you meant is regardless of the license, settings will still be the same.
