Hello,

I want to configure a failover server.
The primary pbx is using an SFTP server for backup.
Do I really need to configure the backup server or can I just do 'Restore a backup' during setup and then configure the Active and Passive server?

@DidierDE
As a first step I would recommend doing this out of office hours as if you do this now
and the main PBX is on Production, the FQDN will change and point to the new installed server.
This may distupt the production PBX connections.
So when the time comes, install the new PBX and restore your latest backup from the production one
in order all the records to be up to date.
Go on this new PBX and set it up as Passive. Passive Servers can ONLY restore backup, they dont backup themselves.
The path will be the same on the sFTP so the Passive Server will pull the Scheduled backup from there.
When you set it as Passive, some services will stop (default behavior).
Then go on the Main Production one and set it up as Active.
Thats it.
Restart the services on the Active one in order to ensure that the A Record will point to the correct PBX.
You can validate here if they have different Public IPs : https://dns.google/
You can select on the Passive what services to monitor on the Active one and the time (in seconds).
Check also what scripts you want to use on the Passive one here :

Our primary PBX is not in production yet, so it is safe for me to do it during office hours.
I just wanted to know if I could restore the backup during setup, or if I need to configure the backup server first with the config xml file, and then do the backup.

@DidierDE then do this now and its faster to do it during installation.
The new PBX will get all the settings directly from the main one, including the location of the sFTP.
Otherwise if you do it later you will have to set it up manually which is more time consuming.

I think you do not understand my question.

My question is: for the installation of the failover pbx, do I first need to configure the server, using the config file and then configure failover, or can I just choose to restore the backup directly on the failover server and then configure the failover?

it would be quicker to do a restore, then configure it as the failover server. Either way, both ways give you the same outcome.

ok thanks for the assistance
