So I read the guide and I've configured DNS with both the A record and SRV record. As far as I can tell they are correct, mxtoolbox.com returns the correct values. I've made the settings in 3CX I believe so now I'd like to make a test call into the system to check it is working.

Can I do it from a SIP client running on my home machine?

If you want to do a proper test of a Direct SIP call to 3CX (and not an extension), then you will want to do that from a different WAN, and not the same LAN.

OK I get that part, that's why I was going to test from home.

I was hoping I could install a SIP application at home and attempt to make the test call from there but the applications I tried won't do anything without a server. Alternatively could someone try calling me if I PM them my address?

It seems as if I need to install a whole second system at home to be able to test if it works at all.

Also I can't see how you initiate a direct sip call from 3CX as the dialler strips out dots and the @.

Some of this is very old information and may not be directly applicable to current versions. However it may give you some ideas on what to try. Calls dialled by an extension will have to match an outbound rule. It is where you send that call you send that call, and the format, that you must work out.

OK so I've managed to call inbound using directsip

I used a softphone called MicroSIP, and in its settings you have to enable "DNS SRV" for it to perform the lookup.

After that I was able to make a call

Added to the above: I had another look at the client and I think that to make a call I need to select the search/magnifying glass option and type the address there?
