I think I may have asked this years ago, but can't find it...

I find that many of my users dial other phone system users with their full 10 digit number which then dials outbound through our SIP trunk and then comes back in. Call quality is still fine, but since we pay per minute, we're basically paying for something that should be free. When we used to run Cisco Call Manager, I had number masks in place that would do this in the background (so someone who accidentally dialed 212-555-1234 would be sent internally to extension 1234). I can't find any way to do this with 3CX.

So far, my best ideas are to either block any calls outbound to extensions that we host on the system (bad user experience) or to create maybe a digital receptionist that informs callers that they are attempting to dial another user on the system and then terminates the call (not great user experience, but would save us money and still keep people from wasting SIP trunk minutes on internal calls).

Anyone else run into this or have a solution I haven't found/thought of?

There's a couple ways you can handle this:

  • Add the full 10 digit DID as a SIP ID to each extension (admin intensive)
  • Use outbound rules and a loopback trunk to manipulate the dial string. This would eat two call paths for the duration of the call.
  • Use a custom template for the phone dial plans to do what you used to do in CCM

I had no idea about adding the 10 digit to the SIP ID. Tested on a dummy extension and this works exactly as expected. As you said, kind of labor intensive, but so is building a bunch of transformations! Thank you so much!

No problem. If you aren't already working with a partner maybe think about renewing your license through one (like us) when the time comes. No additional cost to you and it helps partners get higher status with 3CX. Supposedly with the new Titanium status we'll have more influence with 3CX as far as feature requests and such. And occasionally us partners can be helpful for things like this as well :)
