How do we configure the router phone if it is using a WiFi dongle? For the X5U it does not provision if we use the MAC of the WiFi dongle, and if we use the MAC of the wired port (while connected only over WiFi) it does provision and connect, but the router phone shows down and never shows connected.

(note: I know setting up an SBC over WiFi is not a good idea. The router phone is the only phone being used, and we don’t want to maintain a separate SBC for one phone)

Any suggestions are appreciated!

3CX has never supported WiFi mode on IP phones. We only test and support cabled ethernet LAN mode.

Thanks @CentrexJ. That gave the same result as setting it up over wifi, once it was switched to wifi only. The SBC shows offline.

Sorry I don't have any fanvil phones to test here. I can tell you though that it works on Yealink T53W and T54W using WiFi. Again like you said we would only do this for the phone directly and not use it as a router for other phones.

If you don't have a router phone and are not planning on buying new devices, you can always consider installing a standalone SBC to get the same functionality. https://www.3cx.com/docs/3cx-tunnel-session-border-controller/

I'm currently new to this VOIP thingy. I already made a windows SBC and can provision my local fanvil (X1SP) phones (office) without a problem. My question is can I install another fanvil X1SP to my home without a router phone? or i really need to buy another router phone in order for it to work?

If you want to install a phone at home you have a couple of options

1. Get a router phone model for home (which has a built in SBC)
2. Or install an SBC at home (if you have a machine at home that can host one, or on a Raspberry Pi4B) and setup the X1SP via the home SBC.

Alternatively, why not use or Android / iOS app for home? It will work anywhere you have internet and you don't have to install a separate IP phone.

Hi,

No you cannot - the SBC must be installed on the same network as the phone, its functionality depends on this detail.

So to be clear each time you deploy a new SBC you need to create a new entry for it.

Alternatively see if you can return one of your new phones and get it replaced with a Fanvil V62 (can act as a router phone). Its around $110 and will probably be lower cost than the price of an X1SP+Pi4B put together

For the Fanvil X series, it must be Version 2 Hardware, or it will not provision as a router phone. Sorry. You will need an SBC to connect, or (not recommended) use STUN.

Has anyone tried configuring multiple phones as "standalone router phones" (no secondary phones using their SBC functions) and running them on the same subnet? We have a scenario where employees need to take phones home, and bring them back to their office desk multiple times per week.
-They don't have company assigned cellphones or company computers at home to run 3CX apps.

Yes, as far as having multiple router phones on the same network, with each set as its own SBC. Have not seen any issue doing so. In theory, you should be able to move the phone/router phone from work to home and back.
