We have a customer on V20 with a large group of shared extensions at remote sites. Each one needs to see and chat with a central team, but we don't want them to be able to find each other. The central team still needs to see them by name.

Here's what we tried on one of the site extensions:
- Show my presence off in its department rights: no change, it still shows in Team and search
- See group members off: its Team list goes empty, central team included, and search still finds people
- Hide in phonebook: gone from search, but chats then only show the extension number instead of the name
- Hide in phonebook plus a company phonebook contact with the name: chats still only show the number, and now everyone can find the contact

Is there a way to do this that we're missing? If not, it'd be great to have an option to hide an extension from search for certain users or departments, or have Hide in phonebook keep the name in chats.

This might work, but I don't know how good an idea it is. Each remote user gets their own Department, and the central team is added/given presence view to all these per user departments. How many extensions are there?

Here's another idea:
  • Assume 2 remote locations - create departments called "Loc1", "Loc2"
  • Assume 1 central location - create a departments called "Central"
  • I would the put central team user "Top Dog" in the "Central" team, and also in all the "Loc1", "Loc2" teams
  • I would put Loc1 user "John Doe" in the "Loc1" team
  • I would put Loc2 user "Joe Bloggs" in the "Loc2" team
This way, John Doe would see Top Dog, but John Doe would not see Joe Bloggs; Top Dog would see both John Doe and Joe Bloggs.

You can also fine tune actions and visibility in Users > User > View and Department per-user visibility settings.

Make a proof of concept with brand new clean departments, so there are no previous tweaks that could murk up your observations.

Give this a try and, as always, YMMV.
