FQDN Question?

Can someone explain this example used during the Version 5 install:

"For example, If your phone system is called sipserver.mydomain.com, then both sipserver.mydomain.com and mydomain.com will suffice,
Ths value is not relevant if you specify the IP of the server in the phone
configuration."


My question is:
If I use our FQDN by creating a A Record in our DNS for sipserver.mydomain.com, does that mean that I must change our root domain to also point to the Phone System? How will the mydomain.com suffice if I don't? This is not possible if this is the case since our root FQDN points to our webservers. Am I reading this right?

I assume the FQDN including the nodename would be what you should use in that instance then. It may be that the lookup reverts back up the tree until it finds a valid A-record?
