Running into a confusing situation and looking for some clarification.

Setup

  • 3CX cloud-hosted (*.my3cx.us)
  • Fanvil desk phone
  • Configured as Generic IP Phone
  • No SBC
  • No obvious SIP registration errors in the logs
Issues
  • Extension shows Not Registered even though I’m not seeing registration failures
  • Forcing the user status to Available does not make the phone ring
  • Calls go straight to voicemail/unavailable logic
  • I don’t have physical access to the phone
  • I can’t access the phone’s local web UI to check DND or ringing:
    • Default creds don’t work
    • SIP/Auth creds don’t work
    • I don’t see any web UI credentials exposed in 3CX for this phone
Questions
  1. Why would a Generic IP Phone show as not registered without clear registration errors?
  2. Why can’t I force the extension to Available and have it ring?
  3. Is there any supported way to access or reset the desk phone’s web UI credentials when it’s provisioned as a Generic IP Phone, or is that just not available by design?

Appreciate any insight; I’m trying to figure out if this is expected behavior or if I’m missing something obvious.

What is the model of the device?

Hello,

Firstly you will certainly need an SBC (or phone that is an SBC itself) configured properly.

Does the phone have internet connectivity? How did you exactly setup the credentials on the phone without physical access when it was set as Generic?

If its 3CX's hosted, you will not be able to register any phone via STUN.

Here are all supported Fanvil phones.

https://www.3cx.com/sip-phones/fanvil-x3-x5/

Here's the link to get the 3CX supported firmware for said support phone

https://www.3cx.com/docs/phone-firmwares/

To access the phone, you should be able to factor reset it and then gain access.

if you cannot, then it must be registered to someone elses PBX via RPS provisioning and it's provisioning the phone before you're able to get on to it - in this case, contact Fanvil.

Thanks all, this helps clarify a lot.
  • Phone model: Fanvil X4G (running as X4 since X4G is not listed 3CX-supported firmware)
  • PBX: 3CX Hosted (so agreed, no STUN)
  • Connectivity: The phone does have internet access and is able to register (showing green in 3CX).
The issue was self-inflicted early on I initially set it up as a generic IP phone, which allowed SIP registration but limited management/control. At that point I didn’t have physical access, so I couldn’t confirm DND or local status, and I couldn’t access the phone’s web UI because it had already been provisioned.

I’ve since had the phone physically factory reset, switched it to the proper Fanvil model, and working on reprovisioning it.

What I’m still trying to understand/confirm is:
  • Why the extension showed green/connected but was still behaving as unavailable (no ring / DND-like behavior)
  • How status/DND is handled when a phone was previously set up as Generic vs fully supported
  • Best practice if web UI access is needed on a provisioned Fanvil (before handing full control back to 3CX)
Appreciate the guidance so far this is making more sense now. I need an SBC.

In the normal process, once provisioned, 3CX changes the phone's password. If you open the user's IP Phone tab it's starred out under "Web Console Password" or visible in "Web Console URL" above that.

If you don't have an SBC and are not setting this up as a router phone (it isn't), and aren't on the same network as the server, then I wouldn't expect it to connect and will likely blacklist your IP. In whatever state it was in, it may have been partially connected but I wouldn't expect it to work.

Hi,

Just to mention X4 = X4G, you can choose that when setting it up on 3CX - this is reflected on Fanvil's website too, the phones share firmware.

So to sum it up:
1. Install an SBC
2. Delete the generic phone
3. Add via PnP and its done
