After some research, it seems to me that a gateway (Patton Smartnode) is required if you have a POTs line. Is that correct? Secondly, is it required at all if you have a digital phone circuit, rather than a POTs line?

If you have a voice service provider, other than VoIP, you will require a gateway of some sort, This includes, PSTN, PRI, and GSM trunks/lines.

What if I have data only coming in to the location, with no voice service? 3CX and a Gateway would work with that?

If you have no voice service - then no gateway is needed.
Some voice services come in on Data lines... so talk with your current provider.
Also ensure you are not under contract if you think you may be making a change to strictly VoIP.

Many are listed within 3cx when you setup a new trunk.
I save between 70-80% each month using VoIP instead of my PRI that I had previously from the phone company.
