Currently one of my client have a hosted 3cx and they are using frontier communications internet with a dynamic IP. The site have 3 phones only and I have set them up with STUN connected to the hosted 3cx. Sometime the voice quality is muffled and chopping and later it come back clear. I'm thinking it got something to do with SIP ALG. So I research and I was able to login to the Frontier router and I do see the ALG Passthrough setting. Do I suppose to disable SIP passthrough or enable SIP passthrough? Does enable the ALG passthrough mean allow ALG to passthrough?

Attached is the picture?
Please advise.

Thank you

If you are with a PBX "Hosted by 3CX" then remotely you need an SBC , not STUN.
Anyway, did you follow preconisation settings for 3CX STUN mode?

I would guess that it should be set as Enabled, but, it is a bit confusing as to whether you are enabling pass through (bypassing ALG), or enabling ALG itself. It should be a simple matter to try it either way, and see if there is a difference.

I suspect that may not be the issue, and there is something else at play here, causing audio issues. What Codecs are you using?

That is the issues. i think i should set it to enabled. kinda confusing right? I'm using the default codecs that come with the system..

Unfortunately, many times, the companies that build devices, and those that write the manuals for them, do not see things from the perspective of a user.
I would check to see if the same Codec is being used throughout (provider, 3CX and your devices), or if 3CX is having to do transcoding. The Activity Log will show you if that is happening.

It doesn't matter. SIP ALG is most likely not the cause any of the issues you describe. But as @aws2p mentioned you should be using a SBC. It's the only supported configuration for 3CX hosted instances, and it's the only way we would deploy more than a single phone for sure.

Most likely it just means "allow or disallow these services" but it is unknown as to whether it also modifies the packets.

Your best bet is an SBC which has the ability to "hide" from any ALG, thus bypassing it whether it is on or off
