Don't know if this is important as I thought I'd solved the problem myself but:
On installing 3CX I tried the web browser setup and found the network could only be set to "localhost".
Later I found that using console setup it still failed to pick up the network but I could set the IP manually.
The machine is quite old, with a chipset fault that means the onboard ethernet port isn't usable when more than 2Gb memory is fitted. It has 8Gb, and a PCI network adapter, the onboard is disabled in bios.
I wouldn't worry about this but I'm also having an odd firewall issue.
