3CX doesn't auto upgrade from v16 to v18, not sure what you are referring to.

Please try the license refresh as suggested, it might be sufficient to get you operational for now.
I a referring to that...... from the original post

AND YES 3CX AUTO UPGRADED..... from v16 to v18 ...... my instance is Hosted by 3CX and the original post is more than 2 week ago...
+ for the license refresh I did it nothing changed, so it is not that.

How to get V18

V18 is available for Linux (installed using 3CX iso) or a supported cloud provider and Raspberry Pi4. Windows will be available shortly. If your 3CX instance is Hosted by 3CX, we will update to v18 over the next two weeks. Or you can upgrade the system yourself now from the Management Console.

Interesting, did not catch that. We host all our clients so I probably just skipped over that sentence. Normally if automatic updates are on, it doesn't upgrade versions. I bet they assumed anyone with a PBX hosted with them, did not also have others not hosted by them. Technically the blog post was from August so they took their time.

re: beta, no I wouldn't recommend it, but you asked what was available, and it sounds a bit like you're stuck. The Windows version was not available at v18 launch, they had said it would be Update 1. At least Update 1 is on its second beta so one might assume it's fairly close.

I see, thanks for your time, in the mean while we will wait until 3CX launch a windows version, to upgrade all of our Customers and be able to see them and for them to see us (which... let me remember was in fact the only reason our customers paid to have.... incredible 3cx finally made a version where you just can't have the most in demand feature unless you have the same core version (in other words keep paying), they even excluded that functionality last year from resellers free license keys basic level (in other words licenses from certificates without sales = you get demoted = your free license is getting demoted too = now your license has no features = you also pay). I now see very clear the major feature of that specific ver. (Nice one)....at least 3cx in the last 3-5 year keeps evolving in one direction.

The 3cx hosted clients were auto upgraded. Not the partner hosting like google cloud, but the 3cx provided hosting service was automatically upgraded to v18. Perhaps a good reason to self host would be to have control over this.

Issues with V18 panel upgrade and iso etc.

a) Bare metal on-premises Linux 3CX V16 (16.0.8.9) update via web panel upgrade to V18 button barfed and system could not recover.
b) tried re-installing Linux 3CX V16 (16.0.8.9) from scratch with a backup file and then web panel upgrade to V18 again and barfed with the same message and could not recover.
c) tried using the Linux V18 usb iso and installing from scratch - I could never get the 3CX agreement to show up or the http://<my ip>:5015 to work
d) Re-installing Linux 3CX V16 (16.0.8.9) from scratch using a backup file was necessary to restore the system to normal.

the last few lines in /tmp/UPDATE_FAILED were as follows:
> Execute apt command simulation on "install debconf-utils"
Reading package lists...
Building dependency tree...
Reading state information...
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
debconf-utils : Depends: debconf (= 1.5.71+deb10u1) but 1.5.61 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
> Simulation failed (install debconf-utils)

I recently encountered a similar V16 to V18 upgrade issue that @netampere reported when upgrading 2 out of 3 3CX customers, specifically the debconf version issue:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
debconf-utils : Depends: debconf (= 1.5.71+deb10u1) but 1.5.61 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
> Simulation failed (install debconf-utils)

All three were hosted in Auzre using configurations built using the Azure marketplace 3CX V16 phone system. All three were originally created using pbxexpress a couple of years ago. Interestingly enough, the two that failed to upgrade were originally created in AWS Lightsail while the one that succeeded has always remained on Azure. In other words, the two that failed to upgrade were recently migrated from AWS Lightsail to Azure using a backup and restore, while the one that suceeded has always been hosted in Azure.

@jcolton3 the images used by pbxexpress for both amazon and azure are different, so taking an image deployed to amazon and then moving it to azure with some other tool is definitely not best practices and will lead to the issues you had. Best to redeploy using pbxexpress using backup and restore.

@netampare - this issues happen when you have modified the original linux install. If you cant do a bare metal install using the 3CX linux v18 iso then your hardware is probably old and not compatible with Debian 10.

Edit: there was an issue with the repository this morning which we are fixing

If the upgrade breaks and I don't want to troubleshoot, how can I go on with the last backup from v16? Is it compatible with v18, so that I would be able to set up a new v18 and use the backup here? Or is it only compatible with v16, so that I can only set up the v16 in a fresh installation with the v16 ISO, use the backup here and do the upgrade afterwards?
Short: is the v16 backup compatible with v18 or not?

The general rule is that, that latest Update of the previous Major Release is compatible with the newer Major Release.

In this case what this means is, if the V16 backup you have was taken while your 3CX system was on V16 U8, you have 2 options:
  • Install V16 U8 and restore the backup
  • Install the latest V18 version available and restore the V16 U8 backup

Note:
If your V16 backup was taken while you were on an older update than U8 (e.g. V16 U6), then you must install V16 U8, restore the backup you have, take a new backup while on V16 U8, then use that to restore on V18.

Update to v18 from v16 disappeared, it tells me that my system is up to date.
I tried to make fresh install of v18 from iso but it does not show license agreement and 3CXWizzard is not started.
After sererals attempts I just rollbacked snapshot back to v16.
Is there currenty any know issue?

Seems to also affect V18 ISO installations to a certain extent.

We are looking into it at the moment.

@Nick Galea Thank you for responding. I think you misunderstood the circumstances of these failed upgrades. I did everything by the book and never attempted an image backup and restore between Amazon and Azure. Rather, I created a backup of the Amazon Ligthtsail instances using the "Backup and Restore" option within the 3CX web management console and then successfully restored that backup to a new Azure V16 instance created using the "3CX Phone System" app available in the Azure Marketplace. I had no issues with the V16 instances that were relocated from Amazon Lightsail to Azure, however I was not able to later upgrade those Azure V16 instances to V18. At no point did I attempt to use an image backup and restore. So I believe I already followed your recommendation and still was unable to upgrade to V18.

Both Amazon Lightsail V16 instances were up-to-date prior to migrating them to Azure, as were the Azure V16 instances prior to attempting to upgrade them to V18.

Curiously enough, I noticed that I no longer see an option to upgrade either of the Azure V16 instances that were relocated from Amazon Lightsail after deleting and rebuilding new Azure V16 instances and restoring from a 3CX backup.

Hi David

The Silver 1 Space Hardware(Newer-one) from Askozia won't work with the Upgrade, the Network-Chip is not recognized, so not Networking Possible.
I checked two of them.

Bye
Timm
So far as I can tell, the published 3CX ISO for v18 does not contain the non-free drivers that are needed for the Realtek chips in our Askozia appliance. (I find that strange, since the installation media for the initial migration from AskoziaPBX to 3CX clearly included those drivers.) For that reason, when I run the upgrade, I will have a USB drive on hand with the standard Debian ISO contents, which include the non-free drivers. (Nevertheless, I am going to take an image of the disk before running the upgrade.)

As far as I am aware, the Askozia appliances either had a pretty standard Realtek chip or an Intel chip, depending on the model.
Our Debian ISO also has non-free drivers, so I think there shouldn't be a driver issue.

Do have the USB drive with you to be sure, but I thing it shouldn't be needed.

OK, I see that now—they're just organized differently in comparison to the official Debian 10 ISO. I had been viewing the 3CX v18 ISO from Windows, which incorrectly displays the symlinks in the firmware folder on the 3CX version. I think I'll be just fine when I attempt the upgrade in about a week. Thanks!
