Load new firmware into PBX

Hi All,

We are using Grandstream phones and have been asked by their tech support to update the firmware.

3CX shows the highest available version as the current version. What is the best way to load new firmware manually into 3CX? and would there be any reason not to do this?

We updated these phones via TFTP prior to installing them but hoped we could leverage 3CX to simplify future deployment.

To load firmware higher that that recommended by 3CX, risks issues with the sets, as all features/functions may not have been tested. Is there some specific reason that your Tech Support is asking to update, a certain problem?

3CX only supports loading the official firmware. You basically have a couple choices for doing it via 3CX:

• Upgrade to v16 Beta 1. The newer GS firmware is approved there.
• Replace the actual firmware file on the 3CX box with the newer one from GS. Not supported but avoids having to manually load firmware on each phone.

Hi,

The phones get progressively slower until they become unusable. Rebooting the phone resolves the issue for a few days or a week before they need to be rebooted again.

I don't want to go down the Beta path. Assume that upgrading the phones manually means they would be above the supported firmware version so probably not best.

I might see what else I can find out about these phones slowing down before I go with something unsupported.

If the phone slowing down is a result of a firmware bug, they you probably won't be the only one suffering from this. Usually, in the firmware release notes, there will be any bug fixes listed. Is this one of them? Have you checked he Grandstream website , or searched, for other with the same issue?

I have searched the web and found lots of instances of slow Grandstream phones, various things people have tried but none of them confirmed fixes, just dead threads.

I am trying a few of the things but after being told by Grandstream to upgrade the firmware was going to jump to that. Saying that, I am now a little concerned that they use the "update firmware" as a blanket first response. I have read of instances where upgrading makes things worse.

As long as you have a copy of the current firmware, in the event you need to go back, upgrading one set, to see if there are any improvements (testing purposes), isn't a huge risk.

Thanks leejor, I might give it a try or I may just change the phones as I am not sure these GXP 1628 devices can handle the busy traffic.

Seems crazy they can just self destruct.
