Magicjack

Well I'm going to give it another shot seeing as Radio Shack in the US had them on for $29 on "Black Friday". Worse case scenario, i run it on the PC and route it in on an FXO trunk.

just to let you know if you search there is still a way to get you mj username and password...

I own 2 MJ's (but I moved the service from one to extend the other) so I have a Voice modem I use, can 3CX use a voice modem as a trunk?

I am currently switching back and forth with 3CX and NCH's Axon Virtual PBX (which allows me to use a Voice modem) but if I can get 3CX and MJ playing along I should be good to go.

Will search for this MJ password retrieval on unofficial MJ forums to see what I come up with. In case I don't figure anything out I would like to know how to get 3CX to work with voice modem / magicJack route...

By "Voice Modem" do you mean a SIP Gateway? Because, if you can't get your password, to put into another SIP device, then you will have to plug it into an FXO port , and then bring it into 3CX as a trunk

Voice Modem = Zoom brand 56k Data/Fax/Voice modem
I can make my modem dial and use the Voice feature as if it was a telephone and get the sound routed through the modem.
Axon Virtual PBX has the capability and was wondering if 3CX had it too. I found an M-ATA (made by Patton) but it costs $80+ depending where you buy it which sounds like a better approach, maybe I should get it, since it works on both PBX'es...

The Voice Modem is not SIP, you can't use it as a trunk in 3CX. An ATA or Gateway (The majority) are SIP compliant and convert the voice to digital using standard Codecs. They also handle all of the SIP messaging involved. And, yes, gateways are more expensive than an ATA. But if you have to feed the line out from anything, including Magicjack, PSTN, a Vonage ATA,etc., and you want to "bring it into" a SIP PBX as a trunk, they you will need a Gateway. Magicjack has had a while now to figure out how to "deal" with customers trying to use other devices with their service. I'm sure that there have been several "upgrades" over the last year to plug any loopholes that people have come up with, especially if they are made public on the net.

I ordered a Patton SmartLink M-ATA-1/E in order to use MagicJack's RJ-11 do you know for sure that it will work this route?

That particular device is an ATA (analogue Telephone Adapter), it is not meant to connect to the Magicjack. You need a Gateway. An ATA is what you plug a telephone into if you want to run a phone off of a VoIP provider or an extension off a VoIP PBX such as 3CX.

If you could get your username/password information from MJ, then you could put that into an ATA and do away with the MJ USB dongle. Or... you could use the info to programme a 3CX trunk to register directly with the MJ server.

The RJ-11 on the Magicjack dongle puts out voltage and ringing, just like the phone jack on your wall. An ATA does the same thing. Both are meant to have a telephone set plugged into them. You may very well do damage to one or both if you connect them together. A Gateway is meant to connect to a phone line, it bahaves like a telephone set, it wants to see voltage and ringing current.

Ok, so what exactly do I need to connect to the magicJack in order to place calls? I was using a voice modem but with Axon but I don't like that software, I like 3CX and want to have the same results with magicJack.

You will need a Gateway. There are a number of single (FXO and FXS) and multi line models available. The Linksys SPA3102 is an example of an ATA (FXS) and a gateway (FXO) in one unit, so is the Grandstream HT503.

3CX Trunk--Ethernet cable-->Gateway-->RJ11 cable-->Magicjack-->USB cable-->PC

Ok, so I need an FXS Gateway? or an FXO Gateway?

Basically an ethernet connection goes to the "Gateway FXS or FXO?" to RJ-11 to MagicJack. Which is the cheapest route but still good quality and useability? Sorry for the questions, this just has taken so much of my time it's starting to get frustrating. I just returned the voice modem and cancelled the M-ATA E/1 order, so I need to know exactly what I need so I don't end up spending money (having to return equipment and getting restocking fee, etc etc)

FXO (Foreign eXchange Office) (Gateway) jack plugs into a telephone line (Central Office)
FXS (Foreign eXchange Station) (ATA) jack is where you plug in a telephone (station)

The terms are a holdover from the days of T1 carrier cards being used to extent telephone lines to a remote central office.

Since the Magicjack device acts like a telephone LINE (it gives you dialtone), you run it to the FXO port (a Gateway).

As I said, many single FXO devices also have an FXS port, they are two devices in one box. They also have an Ethernet port. The Ethernet doesn't go to either the FXO or FXS, it goes the the Ethernet jack. You are looking at $60 to $80 USD for a single (FXO) line gateway, although I've seen cheaper used ones. Keep in mind you get what you pay for in most cases. Do shop around.

Thanks! I now know what I need/want. So basically what I bought before (Patton M-ATA E/1) is an FXS and that's not what I need.

:) Know I understand, thank you so much.

You can always make use of the Patton ATA to "run" and analogue extension off of 3CX.

Im returning it. I can use a Y and run the analog phone off of the magicJack. :)
