We have set the codec list order for both internal and external calls to pcma pcmu, etc (we really just want the pcma and pcmu at the top.

When we create a new extension, under the phone provisioning tab it still orders the codecs for the 3CX softphone as gsm-fr, g729, etc.

Is there somewhere we can set this order so all new extensions' softphone codecs are ordered the way we would like?

Yes that would be nice.
Recently found some users complaining of call quality issues, checked my trunks were using the codec's as suggested by our SIP provider, but then looking around and found the users had completely different order, getting them matching has since stopped any call quality issue tickets being created.
Also, I did find that at trunk level and user level the same codec was listed as two different names, at trunk it will show G.711 A-law, and user shows PCMA, why?

Go in settings / general settings set codec order here , this should be used for future extension add

Thank you. Yes I did that. That was what I meant in my first paragraph. I set both internal and external to the order I want, but it does not carry through to new extensions. I have restarted services too, but no difference.

have just tested on one demo pbx, and got same behaviour as yours, umhh we need some 3CX clarification i guess

Hi @JohnS_3CX , please can you give us some lights on this ?

The phones have a default codec list which comes from the phone template of each manufacturer.

so what's the use of general settings?

Those are for audio that passes through the media server of your PBX

Hi John

I understand that the templates do this for physical handsets, but I am referring to the softphone and the codec list in the phone parameters tab of the sets the order of the softphone codecs, yet there is no global default setting I can find for this. I have looked for a softphone template file on the system and I can't see one. Am I right then in thinking that this list is hard coded and the defaults can't be changed from somewhere outside of extension settings?

Yes that's correct. As soon as you create an extension it gets automatically populated with a default set that then needs to be adjusted manually if needed.

You can however mass edit your extensions, and under phone provisioning you will see all the client codecs. Delete them all, and re-add them one at a time in the order you want to use.

Couldn't this more easy to be set in general settings instead of preseting something that needs to be overwritten , that's wasted time and not smart work, like lines at school
