Greetings,

Posting this here with the understanding that these phones are unsupported, but they're all I have for the moment and I really want to get them working with this system :(

What I'm seeing is that the phones are correctly hitting the 3CX server and downloading their configs and firmware (with the files provided on the 3CX support page), but they are hard locking up (about 75% of the time) or rebooting (about 25% of the time) as soon as the sip dialer app loads.

When I say hard locking, the phone shows a blank UI (the normal borders load, but no text is shown), and is otherwise completely unresponsive, requiring a disconnect from the powered ethernet to restart.

I played around with some other firmware versions by loading them into the provisioning folder with very little difference. 3.17 actually causes a crash log to be generated to the syslog stream, 3.16 shows the same freezing behavior.

I'm kind of at my wit's end here. Is anyone familiar with these phones and 3CX v15.5.0?

Where 3CX would prefer that you were using a fully supported phone like a Yealink. The Polycom VVX 601 is not completely "un-supported" but sits on the legacy phones list with limited featureset.

First off check your firmware - you must be at on the below version with 3CX - Polycoms can be quite sensitive to Firmware version:
  • Polycom VVX 601 - SIP-Firmware 5.6.0
Then follow this guide, you can either provision via Option 66 or by placing the provisioning link manually into the interface of the phone itself - https://www.3cx.com/sip-phones/polycom-vvx/

If you are doing this either one of these ways try the alternate and see if the lockup still occurs.
To reset and start over see this forum post:

Eddv: It's an IP601, not a VVX601. IP601's can't run firmware over 3.x

For whatever it's worth I found the problem. I changed the registration password to something numeric only. I have no idea why that works, but the phone no longer crashes!

Ah ha! Those are sitting on the end of life and firmware product list currently.

Glad you solved your issue but for purposes of future proofing your system I would look at getting those upgraded when your customer has the budget for it.
