If I sell someone on a 4sc system and we use a siptrunk with a minute package that allows unlimited call paths, how does that work if 4 people are on the phone at the same time and a 5th, 6th, 7th+ call comes in?

What happens depends on how you configure the trunk. My test system is down at the moment so I can't confirm but if I remember correctly if you have the trunk limit set to less than the SC limit then incoming calls will simply get a busy signal. What the caller hears depends on your provider. If the trunk is higher than the SC limit and the SC limit takes effect then a message is played (you can listen to it under the prompt set). If they match (4SC on the trunk and 4SC limit) I don't know which one takes precedent. I believe it's the trunk behavior.

That sucks. They should at least let the person leave a voice mail or wait in a call queue. I also think inter-office calling shouldn't count against their limits. It's a crappy way to limit their customers. I totally get limiting in-to-out or out-to-in, cause you have to have at least some way to measure a license limit, but dang.

Would you rather they charged per extension? Since the free license is 16SC to start and then drops to 8SC I don't really see an issue.

I don't utilize the free options. Pro only. Mainly cause I want to tie the systems to my own domain name. If I could get the free options and do that, I'd sell all my systems with their max free option.

I mean it's $75/yr difference between 4 and 8SC annual so if you want to tie the system to your own domain name and the 4SC limit is that much of an issue it's a pretty cheap fix.

I'm not just thinking of 4 vs 8 seat. I'm thinking what if the client has one or two busy days out of a year (dental office for example) and normally 90% of the year they only need 8 seats, but those couple days they needed like 10-15 and we have them setup using call queues, then why not let them have people waiting in queue and not force the client to buy a 16 seat for the other 90% of the year they wont ever need or use it.

Makes no sense to turn away the call with a busy signal or whatever audio prompt and hang up that you're saying it does. At least let the person leave a voice mail or wait in a call queue is all I'm saying.

Like any other business you have to pay for whatever you need to meet the expected work flow. For your example if a dental office can't afford the extra $327/yr to have that 16SC capacity then they are probably going to go out of business anyways. Any other system that charges per extension instead of per SC is going to cost more anyways. 3CX's pricing model is fair and is cheaper than just about any other commercial alternative.

Besides, you are anticipating a problem when there isn't one. Offices have been paying this price for years long before VoIP. Back when you had analog lines or a PRI, you had to pay for that capacity 365 days a year, and it was many more pennies then than it is now.
