Hello, I have a client who is running 3cx Standard 16.0.5.622 on Debian and the system is having several problems which I have not been able to resolve, in addition to the system having been built by a previous contractor who will not share the root password he installed with. The current system has 16 extensions and at peak usage has two or three simultaneous calls.

To hopefully resolve problems and get CLI access to the system, the plan tomorrow is to take a full system backup, download the backup, shut down the old system, throw up a VM on Hyper-V and install a new instance of 3cx from the Debian ISO and then restore the backup to the new install. I'm planning to give the new VM 1 proc, 2GB of memory and 600 GB of storage. I will use the same IP for the new instance as the old box is using. A full system backup with all options checked is 200MB.

Are there any gotchas or items I might be overlooking when putting up a new system and restoring a backup to it?

Thank you in advance!

I'm a fan of never using 1 vCPU for any system as if any thread locks it, the VM locks up. If you have the resources, I recommend 2 vCPU, not that you need it, but in case of issues.

You also don't need 600GB of space, drop a zero and you will still be ok.

Make sure the version being backed up matches the version being restored to.

Your plan is solid and what I do in similar situations.

Don't forget the static MAC and NTP settings for the new VM.

Thank you for the quick reply!

One of the problems I'm having is that the system won't update (from the update log) -

Hit:1 http://downloads-global.3cx.com/downloads/debian stretch-testing InRelease
Get:2 http://downloads.3cx.com/downloads/debian stretch InRelease
Err:2 http://downloads.3cx.com/downloads/debian stretch InRelease
Clearsigned file isn't valid, got 'NOSPLIT' (does the network require authentication?)
Ign:3 http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch InRelease
Hit:4 http://security.debian.org stretch/updates InRelease
Hit:5 http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch-updates InRelease
Hit:6 http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch Release
Fetched 2,839 B in 0s (5,221 B/s)
Reading package lists...
E: Failed to fetch http://downloads.3cx.com/downloads/debian/dists/stretch/InRelease Clearsigned file isn't valid, got 'NOSPLIT' (does the network require authentication?)
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Can I expect problems if the system is running 16.0.5.622 and I restore the backup to a new install (just shows v. 16 on the download, but it looks like 16.0.6 is the latest)?

Hello,
I am also experiencing a similar error while installing the 3cx appliance into a VM. I did that last weekend for the first time for learning purposes in a lab environment and everything worked fine. However today I am unable to finish the installation process properly because the package update gets stuck at 20% and never finishes. If I switch to tty2 and manually unlock apt and then run apt update it gets stuck at the "http://downloads.3cx.com/downloads/debian/dists/stretch/InRelease" Repo too. So I guess the repo is bugged at the moment?

Hi jhamann, the error I posted above is an error I'm getting before migrating the PBX to a Hyper-V VM and is one of the reasons I'm doing the move. So in my case, the error has nothing to do with a VM since it's running on a physical system at the moment. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

If the repo was down while trying to update you could get that error. It's also possible you have the wrong repo configured.

What's displayed back if you run
Code:
cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/3cxpbx.list

And what happens during an apt-get update

The move to the new VM resolved the issues with updates and also an issue with the FQDN cert. I was very surprised at how smoothly it went. I had planned on 6-7 hours for the migration including testing and resolving any post-migration issues and it took flour start to finish. System is up and running nicely. Appreciate your pointers, SweetAction. Thank you.
