Role of SBC

Hi,

I am a little confused, we have a phone that is set up to register through an SBC but the SBC is switched off and the phone is still registering just fine. We provisioned it through the SBC then pulled the plug on it, rebooted the phone and it carries on as normal.

How is this possible? I thought it would only register if the SBC was available.

Where is the phone located, SBC and PBX ?

Has this phone been pre-provisioned before (such as in STUN mode) ? we have had instances where if a phone is provisioned in STUN mode then provisioned over (without reset) in another method then then STUN settings stay intact I believe we were going STUN to VPN but the same may apply for SBC.

If your phone is set to SBC mode and no SBC is running that's impossible it works.

So you need to check in console and see in phones if IP is displayed via SBC or not.

Otherwise your phone is not using SBC mode so is it local phone ? remote can be STUN

It used to be STUN Remote, the server is in the cloud. We changed it to SBC in the admin panel, factory reset and then reprovisioned. It does indeed appear to be registering by showing the public IP so I am guessing it never provisioned via the SBC... Do I have to delete the device & MAC and then re-add?

If your phone was used previously in STUN mode his mac adress is surely registred to RDS or SRAPS servers to push the settings on phone.

one simple test is to factory reset the phone and plug it to a network accessing internet. it should retrieve all his config alone pushed by RDS or SRAPS servers, it may ask for login and password i'm not sure but login should be extension and password is voicemail pin

once i bought a second hand phone and it was always restoring config from previous owner. in that case you need to clear RDS or SRAPS or let phone out of internet more than 14 days to forget it from servers and be able to reuse it

Not all provisioning servers store configuration files, they just tell a factory reset phone where to find the configuration. Yealink works in this fashion. So if you provisioned the phone as STUN it would push that MAC to the Yealink RPS. Switching the phone to SBC and factory resetting it would cause it to hit the RPS again but that would be perfectly fine since RPS would just have the provisioning URL which is the same whether you are STUN or SBC

Sorry, it's my bad, i said something wrong about who really push settings to the phone, but globally idea on what happens is the same.
I've only used STUN with Snom phones,previously it was RDS managed by Snom for free and now it's 3CX support directly with SRAPS and asking 75€ for a support ticket to remove mac adress
