Router Phone - Does it need a static IP?

Sorry if this is documented somewhere and I have missed it, but when using a router phone (with other normal phones connect to it) does the router phone need a static IP/reservation like the SBC's do?

Yes it does, unless there are no other phones which are going to be using it as their SBC.

Hi,

It's a very good idea to reserve its IP on your DHCP at least.

In case the private IP changes, the rest of the phones will stop working until you restart them so they can "learn" the new IP.

Ah okay so does it work slightly differently with the SBC's now?

I noticed after update 6 under the phone provisioning the SBC IP box changed to a dropdown with the SBC's in them whereas before you could type any IP.

I assume this means that now if the router phone/SBC IP changes then the config files will update when it reconnects but then the other phones connected will need the new config to connect?

Of course, a reservation is ideal though.

Yes precisely, the SBC informs the PBX of its now current LAN IP, and then next time the phones reprovision (ie. by rebooting them) the will learn the new IP of your SBC and go there and register.

This helps ensure that even if the SBC IP changes, you don't have to go edit all your phones one by one and type in the new IP, instead the PBX provides it to them dynamically next time they reprovision.

If the SBC is down there won't be a valid IP and you will see an error in the event log, so make sure your SBC has reconnected before rebooting the phones.

A reservation ensures that the IP will always be the same, so if the SBC goes offline and comes back, no reprovisioning is needed.
