Finally I found it!
I sort of feel stupid, but also annoyed with Gmail. There is a junk folder and a junk email folder in the list, but these were empty. However, in Gmail at the bottom of the folder list there is a button that says "more labels". When you click this the folder list expands and there is also a folder named spam further down and that is where a stack of my emails from 3CX were sitting.
Damn you Gmail. Why do you need to have a junk mail folder and a spam folder? Who would expect to look for spam when you could already see junk?
Anyway thank you for your persistence Nick and Andreas. The mystery is solved.
