Hello. I am trying to hook up an old alarm system (ITI Caretaker) to our voip system. I'm using a Cisco SPA112 ATA. I know the ATA is working correctly as I can call out using a normal analog phone hooked up to it.

When I hook the alarm system up to it, I get phone line failure from the alarm system (and the light for that line on the SPA112 blinks constantly like the line is being used, even though it isn't).

There are a TON of settings to choose from on the SPA112. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this work? I know it isn't recommended, but I'm trying to make due with what we have.

If the alarm system is meant to connect to a phone line, then it should work. The fact that the line light is blinking suggests that the alarm system is seizing the line. If you can place a call, using a telephone, then it probably isn't a setting on the 112. Keep in mind, that if the alarm system sends data (has a modem), then you might have some issues using a VoIP line, depending on the speed.

You have to connect the SPA112 to C1 and C2

Always ran into issues on alarm systems with TONES.
Just about every alarm vendor I speak to recommends Cellular panel in the alarm system.
Even as backup, they recommend second Cell on another service or real Analog.

You are just inviting problems trying to do it over VoIP. Alarms, postage meters, credit card machines, etc should always be on a true copper line if that's what the manufacturer recommends. If you want to replace the copper line then replace it with something else manufacturer supported like cellular for alarms or internet for postage meters/credit card machines.
