I renewd my license but I cannot activate it, 3cx says Unable to reach 3CX License Activation Server. Confirm that your Primary DNS Server is able to resolve activation.3cx.com.
I can ping activate.3cx.com but the system is looking for activation.3cx.com that is NXDOMAIN.

  • 3CX Version, Professional 16.0.4.493
  • Server OS, Debian 9
  • Is the 3CX Server Hosted and where? On-premises

There is a solution?
Many thanks.

This may be due to the 3CX PBX version you are running, can you check the exact build number under "Dashboard >> Information >> Version" ?

I would like to upgrade to v18, but 3cx tells me my maintenance has expired (but it isn't, my subscription expires in 2023). Is there a way to not reinstall everything?

3CX cannot verify my license key, because activation.3cx.com is NXDOMAIN

Check the updates section to see if you see the next update. If you don't or can't update, I'm afraid you will have to take a backup, deploy a v18 instance and restore the backup.

Backup 3cx with license key and fqdn and copy this file to a local machine.

Within 3CX Management console, click on updates until you see V18 upgrade - install this. This should upgrade the server to debian 10 and V18.

In the case of a failure, use the ISO image to reinstall 3cx https://www.3cx.com/docs/manual/installing-debian-linux-pbx/ and select restore from backup (use the backup taken from above)

After install V18, you should enable 'Automatically update 3CX' , as this will update 3CX and any debian 10 patches - this is the only supported way of keeping your 3cx system secure and updated.

I could see only updates to 16(4A release), if I make a static entry for activation.3cx.com pointing to the ip address of activate.3cx.com I could resolve the issue?

You need to install the updates one at a time, just install each update until no more updates are available to you

I cannot install the update, 3cx cannot verify that I have a regular subscription, it says expired maintenance.

I have no problem doing a 3cx installation, if it weren't for the fact that it is a remote installation 100km away, that's all, I wanted to save myself the trouble. I don't understand why 3CX didn't keep both domains active.

They did for a while but you didn't update in time and now are 5 updates late.

Why it is a problem to do the reinstall remote? Most of my 3cx are remote. The problem is you didnt update for a while as @ConceptsWeb already said.

Well we are moving forward with 3CX V18 and ample time was given to get all 3CX PBXs up to date. We even released a v16 update (v16.0.8.16) for customers who wanted to keep their PBX on v16 for a while longer (until November 2022). The problem here is that the PBX in question is too outdated which we always recommend against as sometimes it may even be a security risk not being up to date.

Ok... I have a similar problem.... on my ATT connection nslookup will resolve the 3cx domain but not any sub addresses (as if 3CX has very high security on its DNS servers) in other words login.3cx.com portal.3cx.com activation.com but I can ping all three.

But I have a Spectrum connection and its primary dns servers cannot resolve 3cx.com at all via nslookup.

So I hard coded in my hosts file the three addresses listed above and I can get to the portal see my licenses, but I cant register a license. So I think there is a 4th "A" address which has to be resolved. or "AAAA" for IPV6.

Please advise the DNS entries which need to resolve to register a server.

but in general I think 3CX has a structural DNS problem on a global basis...NSLOOKUP.PNG

And BTW this has nothing to do with the Operations of the product, or the version of code. I think your DNS is simply broken so you probably ought to inform your network team they have a problem.

@sfriday022

We have no other DNS related reported issues and to be honest I think you may have misunderstood the situation.

As per our blog, activation.3cx.com has been taken down and what @mario_c is experiencing is actually expected as he's running an old v16 version.

All that's required is that the 3CX configuration at hand is restored to the latest version of 3CX which currently is v18.0.3.641

I get correct responses

nslookup activation.3cx.com does not work, as the dns record does not exist - has been replaced with activate.3cx.com
